Hi,

Winlogon.exe has been infected with the spy-agent.n trojan. I have followed every step in your ReadMe post but nothing seemed to work. McAfee states that 'The file c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe is infected by the spy-agent.n trojan and cannot be cleaned.'

I have read other posts by people who've had this problem but to no avail. The only success I had was with bitdefender - it found then cleaned/deleted the winlogon.exe file : c:\windows\system32\dllcache\winlogon.exe.

TrojanHunter found the trojan but couldn't clean or quarantine either.

For some reason PandaActiveScan didn't offer me a report afterwards - but then it didn't find anything anyway.

AVG found the problem but failed to deal with it. Spybot & Ad-aware SE failed to find anything.

Attached are the logs. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Here is my Hijackthis log

I had the spy-agent.n trojan infecting my winlogon.exe for ages and no-one seemed to know a quick and easy fix for it (it did all the hijackthis postings, counterspy, trojan hunter etc), and the McAfee pop up was annoying me. The only programs that seemed to find it were AVG, McAfee, Bitdefender and Trojan Hunter - & non could get rid of it.

Steps:
1. Insert your windows cd and select install windows from the AutoRun menu.
2. From the setup screen select upgrade (not install windows!) from the drop down menu
3. Follow the instructions and have your serial number to hand.
It'll take about 35 - 45 mins to complete but you can just leave the installation to its own devices.

Bear in mind that with this method you may have to download all your XP updates again. If you have a non SP2 windows cd and are still on dial-up it may take forever to install all your updates again as SP2 is a big download! If you do have a post SP2 cd and/or a fast internet connection it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Note[i][b]
THIS IS HOW I SOLVED THE ISSUE. I've also been advised the the recovery console (boot from your windows cd and select Recovery) may solve the issue but I found that out after I carried out the steps above. Which ever method you use, Windows is still basically replacing the winlogon.exe file with a fresh, clean one.

Hope it helps.

I deleted that file yesterday. Should I have done? I have solved the infection - see my other post for all to see.
Thanks for your reply.
