I have received this message and when trying to log on to windows!

"You receive an "Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the dynamic link library Shlwapi.dll" error message

I tried to fix with the MS fix and cant get by the error message when it goes to:
"You receive an "The procedure entry point RtlIpv6StringToAddressExW could not be located in the dynamic link library Shlwapi.dll" error message"

This happened after the auto update feature from MS did its thing!

I then tried this suggestion:
Upon booting Press F8 then pick the "Safe mode with Command Prompt Option".

Once you've logged in (it should let you) you will see the Command Prompt Window.

Get to the C:\Windows\system32\Restore directory and type: rstrui.exe

This should bring up the System Restore Utility


I got to the System restore window but it's blank! Now what do i do?

First the following message came up and I hit the space bar and it went away.
DDE Server Window: rstrui.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link
library Shlwapi.dll"


Then I retyped your sugg. and it still came up blank.

1. Click Start, click Run, type %windir%\inf and press enter

2. Locate the Sr.inf file, (listed as Sr), right-click the file, and then click Install.

3. In the Files Needed dialog box, click Browse. Locate the Sr.sy_ file in the i386 folder of the Windows XP CD, click the file, and then click Open.

4. When the installation is completed, restart your computer.

You may need to run this as well

Items in blue which are underlined are clickable to give more information about the process

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter, you need the XP CD

Windows File Protection will show an on screen blue progress bar which will simply disappear when the scan is complete, reboot when it does

If you do not have an XP CD you can borrow a same version as was originally installed XP CD, if you downloaded SP2 then you need an SP1 XP CD

I cant get to that screen. The most it has gone is the DOS prompt and then the blank screen. When I try to log on at the password screen and press enter I get

If i click ok it just stays at the picture of the feilds of the start screen with no icons or start bar. I tried control alt del and i get

taskmgr.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point RtlIpv6StringToAddressExW could not be located in the dynamic link
library ntdll.dll"

After that I have to shut down to get anywhere!

Use safe mode with command prompt, type sfc /scannow

If it does not run

You can use this guide to repair XP

Possibly, you will need to press the start button and keep tapping the delete key, (possibly F2) until the PC enters set up. Change the boot order to CD ROM Drive then hard drive, press F10 then press enter, load the XP CD then type Y then press enter, as it reboots, look for press any key to load from CD, press enter

You will need your XP product key to complete this

The XP Product Key is a 25 character alpha numerical code, which does not include the sequence OEM

If you have audio / video files which are subject to DRM you should check with the provider for known issues with performing an XP repair install

Windows XP repair feature won't delete your data, installed programs, personal information, or settings. It just repairs the operating system

The XP repair install will look and run as a normal install, however, you must not see a request to format the drive

After running XP Repair you will need to install all Windows Updates

Did not work so I re-installed as directed. It worked fine until the point that I downlaoded the updates from microsoft and then it went right back to

Any idea now? Bad download thing?

Whichever you think is quickest

Run the repair as this removes all updates, then download them in fives until the error shows

Or

Click start, control panel, add and remove, tick show updates at the top, remove them in fives until the error goes

Once you can tie it down to one update, we can look at the reason for it

I was able to downlaod all the updates except these three without my system crashing:
1. KB834708 Cumulative Security Update for Intermet Explore 6
2. KB835732 Security Update fo Windows XP
3. KB828741 Security Update fo Windows XP

It took a while but this is where I'm at now. The system runs ok at this point but now I have a partitioned HD and none of my old files back yet.

Can you see the files and get access denied?

Not to sound too dumb but how do I see them? Where do I look?
I do also have a Seagate external backup device that I have backed up in the past not long before the crash!

Where you say a partitioned drive, if it C and D then can you look at the contents

When I re-installed XP it made a new partition (I think?) . On startup it gives me two choices to load Windows from and the frist one is the good system (current) and the second wont boot.
Where do I look at the other! When I search for files it does show them but I didnt try to do anything with them yet!

If you are lucky, you will be able to copy a file from the non boot to the one you will continue to use

Once you are sure you have everything you need from the non boot then we can look at removing the start up entry and also the duplicate windows folder if you have one
