I've gone through the steps outlined, which temporarily improved things but most have returned. The computer was fine until I copied old backed up documents from another HD to this one. Thankyou for the assistance.

Hi :whistling:

Open this folder C:\HJT and right click Hijackthis.exe and rename it to HJT.exe

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Cheers for helping :whistling: VundoFix had trouble removing the files - kept asking me to "restart" over and over. (Also, if it helps there is an IE5 folder that reappears in my "Temporary Internet Files" each time I delete it - I'm using Version 6.)

Hi :whistling:

Do this for me and then we will remove this stingy pest

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rnrumnj.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

Hi :whistling:

Looks like that got it

Please run a scan with HijackThis and check the following lines for removal:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5A6733CF-19A5-F6D9-1261-0629292E6AAB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nrxmqkd.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {87F06C05-99D4-425F-AAA1-CBD4B5890F13} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyx.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebyx - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyx.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winpdc32 - winpdc32.dll (file missing)

Now close ALL other open windows except for HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report along with a new hijackthis log.

Very good, not much there :whistling:

Please run a scan with HijackThis and check the following lines for removal:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rnrumnj.dll] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rnrumnj.dll,gmmfejd

Now close ALL other open windows except for HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis.

Browse for and delete these files IF PRESENT:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ixt0.dll_tobedeleted I know this ones present, the other 1 may not be

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gmmfejd

Deleting Cookies on Firefox

Glad I could help :whistling:

let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you don't have them:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Done all that ^^^ Finally, should I remove some of those previously downloaded programs? - I'm running AVG Anti-Spyware & Trojan Hunter on top of the recommended (SpyWare Blaster, SpyWare Guard, AdAware SE & Spybot Search & Destroy).

(I'm also running Symantec AntiVirus.)

Hmm, that is alot:

I would drop trojan hunter unless you paid for it. I would drop Spybot or Adaware or both, they dont carry the punch they used to Heres a program I really like that I would add SuperAntispyware
Spywareblaster is fine, It really just sits there un noticed doing its job :whistling:
