Im pretty sure the only way you could do that is backing it up onto a flash drive and transfering your files onto another computer then put them back on after upgrading.

If you get a retail disk, you can upgrade ME to XP.
If you get an OEM disk, it won't let you upgrade. It will want to wipe the drive.
Be advised that by upgrading, you carry over any problems that you have with ME into XP, which in some cases will magnify them. It's generally recommended that you wipe the drive anyway prior to putting XP on.
