Digital Audio Extraction isn't based on the sound card. It's based on the drive and Windows itself.

The only real difference between Digital and Analogue in this respect is how the sound gets transferred. Under previous versions of Windows, you needed an audio cable that went from the CD drive to the appropriate connector on the board/card.

Under Windows XP, the sound information comes down your IDE cable instead which is far more reliable, considering it's already designed to shift lots of data around as it is, and the audio cable isn't used unless you tell Windows to use it. This method of getting sound isn't supported under any other versions of Windows and AFAIK was unique to XP on the Windows platform anyway.
