I have Widows Me installation file and serial key on my c: drive

I do have a burner, but it not fucntioning at the moment. The builder of my computer put Me install files in a folder on my c: drive with the key because he said he did not have a disc to give me.

ok where on your c: drive is ME just in windows or in a sub directory
such as C:|windows\ME?

It is in it on unique folder on the c:\ drive. The actual address reads C:\Windows Me

Ok then you can run the setup from C:\Windows\ME
If it ask you to format your drive say NO. Also make sure it installs
in the C:\Windows(it should be the default.)
DO NOT INSTALL IN C:\WINDOWS\ME
or you will destory your cab files.

So basicaly just run the Me setup file in the C:\windowsMe directory. It will ask if I want to format the C:\ and my answer will be "No". It should then move forward with reinstalling windows onto my c:\ drive in the C:Windows file by default.

is this correct. I wont do anything until you reply.

There is an easier way to do this. First, please do a search for cab files first. Not where the windows directory, but where are the cab files.

Search *.cab

When you find the location,

START > RUN type,
MSCONFIG

You will see a button called EXTRACT FILE, click it.

Browse to the directory containing your cab files, ie, c:\windomsme\options
Point the place to save to your current windows directory, ie, c:\windows

after replacing that file, reboot.

See if the problem goes away.

If that doesn't work, then we will try the system repair

there are several cab files in the c:\windows\options directory. Do I need to extract and replace each cab file or certain ones?

and let me see if I have this correct. Search for cab file on my C:\ drive, when I find the original cab file that are in the c:\windows\option, I then go to the msconfig and select extract. I select the cab file, one at a time, that is located in the c:\windows\option, hit the start key, and then browes to select the same cab file that is located in the c:\windowsMe directory where my copy of Windows Me installation files are located to replace the one that is in the c:\windows\options. Is that correct. If so, I will do that to see if it fixes my problem.

you should be able to select the directory the cab files reside in...if that fails, I will try and find what cab file it extracts from.

So, select
c:\windomsme\options
as the source
