And here I was thinking you might struggle with that fix  The next bit? Here's a clue :whistling:

Here's the masterplan, kill ConHook infection, then run System File Checker. However, if circumstances do not allow that to happen, reverse the two processes.

If we have to do a Windows repair, do you have the Windows XP install CD to hand?

Let's have a go this way first.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log, from normal mode, in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Hopefully the first part will have got rid of any Vundo left overs mentioned in the AVGas log. For ConHook, please try running it bit differently:
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • You will receive a message saying Vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK.
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once the scan is complete, right-click inside the listbox (white box) and click Add more files?
  • Copy & paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes:
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkjj.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\jjkkj.*
  • Click Add Files and click Close Window.
  • Click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis log, from normal mode.
Please run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Also, please rehide the protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Check" Hide protected operating system files.

Hi Phil,
Well that’s Sunday morning out of the way. I hope your having a good weekend.
I think we have almost cracked it. :whistling: Fantastic. (I was going to attach a mp3 file of Fanfare for the Common Man to celebrate, but thought it may be a little premature).

No more, blank, blue screen’s in normal mode. I can’t comment about Safe mode as I haven’t tried it yet.
The icons to the right of the task bar have all come back up again, some wanting to reinstall themselves. So I’ve gone into “msconfig>Services” and deselected the start-up items I know I don’t need on start-up.

On a fresh start up I still get the small grey window pop up “Generic Processor for Win32 Services………”

The PC seems to be running slower than normal as well. I have in the past run a program called “PcBugDoctor” Which has seemed to work, but whether it causes problems in the long term I don’t really know. & no, I haven’t used it since we have been trying to resolve things. Do you know of it? What are your thoughts?

Heres the requested logs:

Hopefully the first part will have got rid of any Vundo left overs mentioned in the AVGas log. For ConHook, please try running it bit differently:
· Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
· You will receive a message saying Vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK.
This didn’t happen?
“C:\WINDOWS\system32\jjkkj.*
………………………………………
· Turn your computer back on.
· Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis log, from normal mode.”
On turning back on I got the usual Grey Pop-up Window “Generic Host Process for Windows32 Services…”

This came up when I went to Microsoft Update to install :MSXML6.RTM Security update Microsoft SQL Server feature Pack.
I can, at the moment at least, get online now via IE7 without it shutting down and without any other pop-ups that I can see.

I notice that my Memory Stick has moved on it’s own accord from “i” drive to “c” drive.

Should I now turn back on “System Restore”?

Can you see anything else?

Thanks

Paul.

Buena tarde Paul

I bet that last bit was a breeze for you. Wow! You were really badly infected - we best pay homage to Atribune for his brilliant VundoFix tool.

BTW, it worked well and took out the ConHook infection. The * in computing is a wild card as is the ? sometimes seen in infections. Your drive letter change is likely due to resetting the Windows system with SFC scan.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

I'd really like to see the log from a fresh AVGas scan in safe mode (if possible not not mandatory) just to see where we are now.

So could I see an AVGas log and a fresh HJT log created after AVGas scan and a reboot please?

BTW, I have Fanfare for the common man on my PC, so I have just played it.

I am shocked to see the return of : O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {C004DEC2-2623-438e-9CA2-C9043AB28508} - (no file)
Slight difference to the one you told me to delete this one is not “ToolBar888” is there a difference?

I don’t understand how all the tracking cookies got through!
INTERNET OPTIONS SECURITY SET TO “Level Zone Medium-High”
“Privacy Medium High”
“Pop-up Blocker on”
Pop-Up Blocker settings High:Block all Pop-ups.

So how are so many able to get through? The settings are set where they are, so I can access my mail boxes with MSN.com & Yahoo mail. & other than opening & closing MSN almost immediately the only place I went to was MSN mail.

Hmm are you an old (I don’t mean age here, no offence meant) ELP fan? Or do you just happen to have Fanfare for the Common Man on your PC? I ask as I am. A fan, that is.
BTW, well done with your Spanish greeting earlier. Our emails are intriguing my 13 yr old son who reckons we have a similar sense of humor.

He also wants to know where you get the "safe" smilies from as I told him they all carry some kind of virus or another.

BTW How do I reset the Windows system s it’s just made “i” dive a CD drive? When I only have one DVD-CD drive & that’s “D”. It’s also created another DVD drive in “G”.

Strange one to me but probably normal to you.

Thanks & goodnight for now. I shall look forward to your reply hopefully tomorrow.

Buenos dias Paul

The HJT log looks fine as does the AVGas log. BTW, the 03 entry is 888 toolbar, but there is no file so it is just a dormant registry entry (you probably have a few hundred of those already) and will do no harm. You can try to fix it again using HJT if you so wish. The 011 entry is for MSIE version 7.0 and therefore legitimate.

I want to do a couple of things, one is to get rid of the error message, if that is what it is; please quote it verbatim, and just tweak up your system generally.

The following HJT fix will reduce the resources and RAM being used by your PC without doing any damage. It merely reduces the amount of start-up programmes running at all times unnecessarily. This is optional and entirely up to you, since it is your PC.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

Good Morning my Friend,

Sorry it been a little while getting back to you.

Sometimes it get's more than a little hectic here. People think that when you live in somewhere like Spain you must be on a permanent holiday, oh if only.

It’s like when you’re ill people wish they were ill too, so that they could catch up on the books that they’ve been wanting to read & think you must be having a life of Riley (whoever Riley is).
Life unfortunately isn’t like that is it.

Phil you asked me for a copy of the problem Verbatim, so here you have it. Two are almost the same (I think)the third looks the same but isn’t as it tells me it’s going to close.

Well I am well impressed with “TuneUp Utilies 2006” It really has made a difference to the way things seem to be running. Thank you. I gather this is your subtle way of telling me to ditch PcBugDoctor & I have to admit with TuneUp it’s not just a matter of visually seeing unused files being deleted you can actually see & feel the difference. Yes, this would be a good advert for DAZ. But honestly Phil I would recommend it to my friends.

System Advisor Has just told me that I don’t have any Anti-spam software! I find that hard to believe with the two types of AVG I have running plus Windows Defender in the background but there we go. Is there a free program you suggest?

It also reported that AVG Resident Shield Service was using an abnormally high amount of memory. TuneUp Process Manager shows this to be 32,624Kb. Other than Terminate Process which seems to be the only option what else can I do to use less memory here?

Here’s the latest HJT Log. In case you want to see it.

Hello again Paul

The error is being generated by something in the start-up I think, so I would like to see a Fresh HJT log from normal mode for each user other than the one we have been working on. It is likely to be a third-party software issue, but it's tracking down which one. Do you recall installing something just prior to the problem starting, a printer perhaps?

Looking at your latest HJT log, I see an entry that tells me that you have had a BSOD (blue screen of death). It is not essential, but we can remove that entry quite simply.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

System Advisor is trying to sell you something. If you want a programme to run in conjunction with Outlook Express to enable you to choose what emails you download and even "bounce" emails back to spammers as though you do not exist, have a look at: http://www.mailwasher.net/main.php

I'm not sure that you have a problem with AVG AV, or is the high usage with AVG AS? I think both have Resident Shields.

Finally for this round:

Please delete your temporary files.

Click on START > RUN > type in cleanmgr and hit ENTER

You will see a window asking you to choose your harddrive (most likely C: Drive)

Click it and Windows will now scan the drive and show you the results

Make sure the following are checked:Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Compress Old Files (if you want more disk space)

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Next, go to Start>Run>type in %temp% hit Enter and delete the content of all the temp folders shown (only the content, not the folder). A couple of files may be in memory and will not therefore delete, this is normal.

Hi Phil, :whistling:

I was just about to send this to you, and I noticed your very speedy reply. Thankyou.
I will copy it and go upstairs and put your kind instructions to work.

Here’s what I was about to send.
Something strange just happened.

I was typing out a reply to an email on MSN :) using MSN explorer when the task bar suddenly disappeared along with all my desktop icons?

Checked “Windows Task Manage” everything looked ok. Had to reboot with task manager.
On reboot I got my old favourites up again:

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services :help:
Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Error signature
szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : unknown
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

The following files will be included in this report:
C:\DOCUME~1\Paul\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERefef.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Paul\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERefef.dir00\appcompat.txt

Ho Humm! Have disconnected from the router again. To be on the safe side. Sending this via Theo’s computer.
Sorry,
Paul

Hello again Paul

There is a sure fire way of doing this but it involves disabling all of your start-ups and then enabling them one at a time until you get the error. That way you find your problem, but it's a tough way. I have removed a lot of your start-up, so it might be on a different account.

Right,

This is a long one I'm afraid. I will try & re-run HJT on Serena's setting tomorrow mornig.
I have been thinking about what you said re installing a printer or similar.

I can think of two things.
A/ When I turn on the computer now (meaning the past 48-72hours) I have started to get a pop-up window open From the following which I instinctively cancel and think no more of it

Widow 1/ “Windows Installer
Windows Installer preparing to install”.

Window 2/ “InkSaver
Please wait while windows configures InkSaver”

It then changes to another small window “InkSaver” ( a program I use to keep the cost of my printer ink down & it actually disappeared when a lot of stuff, ie programs, Videos, Music files, family photos and downloaded software. I used E drive as C drive is only 29.8G and E drive is a whopping 119 G!)

Window 3/ “InkSaver
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package “InkSaver.msi” in the box below.
C:\DOCUME~1\Paul\LOCALS~1\Temp\_is3\

Window 4/ InkSaver
Error 1706.No valid source could be found for product InkSaver. The Windows Installer cannot continue

B/ Just prior to the problems I recently had several stabs at trying to setup wireless networking between my sons PC & this one. Mine being connected direct to the router, while Theo’s being wireless PC. This has proven a major headache for us as we wanted his PC in his bedroom but more often than not it couldn’t pick up the signal let alone send one, so we’ve had to Place Theo’s PC at the Bottom of the stairs while mine is on the landing upstairs (that’s where I am able to shut myself off to some extent)

Theo’s PC shows that his system is on Wireless Network Connection 4 while mine just says under Network Connections Local area connection.
Under “View workgroup computers mine is logged as “Paul’s Computer (Family)”
Theo’s is “Theo’s Computer (Home-Theo).

I don’t know if either of these are causing the problem but it sounds like one or both of them may well be.

This is a strange one ,

On starting HJT on Serena’s settings the following happened:

01-Hosts file redirection…

RO – HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page=http://go.microsoft.com/fwink/?LinkID=56626&

Then this For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file.
If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThismay NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, Run and type:

Notepad “C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts”

And press Enter. Find the line(S) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as “hosts.” (with quotes), aqnd reboot.

THEN ANOTHER WINDOW
HijackThis
An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modMain_CheckOther1Item()
Error #75 - Path/File access error

Please email me at [email protected], reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 7.0.5700.6
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

Continued with the rest of the Scan then got the following:

HijackThis
Write access was denied to the location you specified. Try a different location please.

I didn’t make any selection![b]

Heres the HJT files
Deborah's setting.

Hello Paul

I can reduce the amount of start-ups for this account, without any detriment. If you want me to, I can disable the Ink saver from all accounts. If this stops the problem, great, if not, enable it again.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DAEMON Tools] "E:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools\daemon.exe" -lang 1033
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BgMonitor_{79662E04-7C6C-4d9f-84C7-88D8A56B10AA}] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\lib\NMBgMonitor.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\PROGRA~1\MSNMES~1\msnmsgr.exe" /background

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Other accounts may well hold the key to this problem, but from experience, I would like you to consider this option very seriously, and ask both account holders if they would mind co-operating.

If you delete all other accounts apart from yours (the one I have been working on), Windows, by default, places all files pertinent to that account, i.e. My Documents, into a folder on the desktop with the account's name.

By doing this you delete the registry for those accounts and many problem too we hope. If you decide that you still want individual accounts, you can re-create them in about 30 seconds, and the account holder can transfer their files as they would like them.

Hello there Phil,
I see you have cloudy blue sky’s today in Worcestershire. It’s fairly overcast here today but still up around 25C at the moment.

It’s no problem closing the other three accounts down whatsoever. I will just move the odd folder into me own account probably a Barbie game for Serena & some photos for my wife. Other than that? Well, they all use Theo’s computer downstairs now.

So I’m about to pop upstairs & get on the case at hand.

Thanks,
Paul

OK Paul, I'm not going to be around much today, but please let me know how your PC is running without the other accounts; I still haven't ruled out an operating system repair yet.

Sorry,
It should read "I will just move the odd folder into my own account ..."
I most certainly don’t wish that you should think I have no grasp of the Queen’s English since I moved to Spain. Now that would be frightful.

This is his wife here and he has just said to me ”where do the commas go?” Still convinced he understands English?

C U L8r,
Paul :whistling:

Well it’s chucking it down with rain right now, probably not enough though or the wrong kind of rain.
I followed your instruction through to the letter & deleted the other three accounts.
Now here the thing, when I go to search for anything the program can’t find it.
Search for “Corel” (as in CorelDraw)
Nothing
Search for “CorelDraw
In the C drive” (I know it’s there)
Nothing
Search for “Corel”
In “C:\Program Files
Nothing
Search for “CorelDraw”
In “C:\Program Files\Corel”
Nothing!

The monitor tends to flicker now or locks up. I have to go to Ctrl Alt Del >log out>log in,:- to put things kind of back to normal.

So I expect it's going to be a system repair.
