When I start my computer if runs through the normal log in process, I enter my password and it starts to load. But after my password has been entered it goes very slow and then goes to my desktop but the only thing that is there is my wallpaper. The only way I can open programs in through ctrl+alt+del (task manager) then I go to run new task. I don't know if I deleted a file on accident or what but just got a new program to get rid of spyware because I had it all over my computer and I had to get rid of it. Any help you can provide would be great. Thanks a lot.

First let's try this:

How to Start Your Computer with the Last Known Good Configuration
To start your computer by using the last known good configuration:

1) Start your computer.
2) When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key (or just keep tapping the F8 key).
3) When the Windows Advanced Options menu is displayed, use the arrow keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.

The Last Known Good Configuration feature provides a way to recover from configuration problems such as newly installed drivers that may be incorrect for your computer's hardware. It does not correct problems that are caused by missing or corrupted drivers or files.

The Last Known Good Configuration feature uses information that is saved from the last time you shut down your computer to restore registry settings and drivers. Because of this, you can use this feature only if you were able to start your computer successfully prior to restoring your system by using the last known good configuration.

After you start your computer by using the last known good configuration, changes that were made since the last successful startup are lost.

Let me just start by saying thank you all very much for the help. To answer the first reply, not only am I missing my desktop icons but it wont let me right click the desktop and I don't have a toolbar either. It is just the wallpaper. I did try to restore my system to an earlier date and it seemed to work fine when I started it up that time but since then I have not been able to start it up normaly. I am using Spybot - Search & Destroy to get rid of my spyware but it started acting up before I got that. Now for the second reply. Again I did do the "last good working" deal. It didn't really seem to do anything. Now when I do it, it comes up with an error message in a dos style prompt. It says I am missing a file. I am going to go ahead and post this and then restart my computer to find out what the name of the file is, then I'll post it. Thanks again everyone.

i also keep getting this small pop up box, even when i am not connected to the internet that says "it's time" and thats all. and on the very top bar it says "project 1" and you can either x out of it or hit ok and either way it doesn't seem to be doing anything. just a random pop up.

Can you boot to your desktop now?

If so, Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore choose a date before the problems began.

I was reading up on somethings today and I found this on that "it's time" and "project 1" its something to do with losing your icons and task bar this is all I was able to save from the page before the phone guys messed up my phone line Wish they would finish the work soon

Something called "Dynamic Desktop Media" has been known to cause the desktop items to disappear. Use Task Manager to end the sysu.exe process.

Look in Add/Remove Programs and in Windows\Downloaded Programs for "Dynamic Desktop Media" and uninstall it. If a "ddm" folder remains behind (could be in C:\Program Files or C:\Programs\), delete it.

here is the norton thing on it click here I think this is your problem maybe Admin can look at it more and see if I'm on the right track. hard right now for me to with them doing more work on the phone line upgrade.

Spybot and Adaware are both supposed to be able to remove Dynamic Desktop Media infections. I think GreenJeep accidentally deleted some system files, or has registry corruption, which is why I recommend a reinstall.

After reinstalling, running Windows Update, and a Spybot S&D scan, it would be a good idea to run a HiJack This scan, just to be sure there's no spyware left that will continue causing problems.

Tazz was exactly right. I had sysu.exe running and it wasn't showing me my desktop. i stopped the process and it works fine now. i am running all sorts of spyware cleaners and virus ctachers and things so everything with hopefully be ok. thanks for all your help everyone. -joe
