I'm writing this on another computer because I can't get mine to log on.

I click the D-link Icon, then get an hourglass by the cursor, which then promptly disappears, and I can't configure my wireless connection.

I got attacked by some virus last Friday, and after looking up all the symptoms, it looked like Spyware Sheriff.

Spybot S & D didn't get it.
Norton couldn't get close. (It always had to shut down when doing a full scan, somewhere around the temp files, leading me to think the problem is in there.)
I 've tried Comodo, and it gummed up the works entirely. I had to start removing stuff just so I could clear enough memory to be able to get rid of it.
I've Tried Eweido, SmitRem, Killbox, Fixwareout.

What have I got, how do I get rid of it, and is my wireless connection gone for good?

Here the Hijack this Log:

Hello Dave and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions! (Click the Options drop down near the upper right of the topic. Select Print this topic.)

You have been hijacked by those wonderful friendly people in the Ukraine and they are controlling your surfing or lack of it in your case. This normally leads to the Wareout infection which I can see is present on your PC. Let’s see what we can do.

I note that you are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then Program Files.
In the menu bar, go to File>New>Folder. That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can right-click on and rename to HJT or HijackThis. Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Cut ‘n’ Paste your HijackThis.exe into it.

Please open Spybot S & D, and turn off Resident Teatimer. Do this by clicking Mode at the top of the screen, choose Advanced Mode then Tools and then Resident and unchecking Teatimer. It will hinder our attempts to clear out some files that need to be removed.

Also please disable AVGas Guard from running for the same reason. Right click on the orange/multicoloured icon with an S, in the taskbar (near the clock) and uncheck Resident Shield. The icon will change to a grey colour.

When your PC has been declared clean, please only enable one of those two programmes to run in real-time. All others should be used as “on demand” scanners. Having more than one antispyware programme running in real-time will cause slowness and even conflicts.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.

Run HijackThis. Click "Do a System Scan Only", and place a check next to the following items (if found):

Click FIX CHECKED. Close HijackThis.

Finally, please post the contents of the text file that opened earlier (you can find it at C:\fixwareout\report.txt ), along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.

I had to download the BFU zip file update separately, so I'll get a crack at it tonight. Thanks.

The Fixwareout download wouldn't work unless it could access it, and since that computer has no internet access, i had to get it and save it from another computer via flash drive.

OK. I did everything. D-Link still won't respond. I even tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers, and nothing is working.

Here's the Fixwareout Log:

Hello again Erin

The log looks better with wareout, but I notice that you have some start-ups disabled, I need to see those. Also we can do a DNS flush.

1. Open the start menu and click on the Run icon.

2. In the "Run" dialog box type in command then click OK.

3. This should open up a black box with a command line, if not make sure you spelled "command" correctly.

4. At the command line type in ipconfig /flushdns and press enter.

5. You should get a confirmation that says "Windows IP Configuration Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache"

6. If you don't get this confirmation double check your spelling of "ipconfig /flushdns".

Run MSCONFIG and enable everything in the startup area. To get to MSCONFIG, click on Start -> Run -> type in MSCONFIG -> click OK

Under the "General" Tab

Ensure "Normal Startup-load all device drivers and services" is checked.

Click Apply->OK->Follow the prompts to Restart

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look

Hello again

I don't see anything bad in that last HJT log, however your Java is way out of date and can be exploited. We can easily change that by updating, but that assumes that you can connect to the internet, so here are the instructions for when you can.

Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  • It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  • If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
    Downloaded Applications
    Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
The only other comment I would make is that you do have a few unnecessary files in start-up and these can be deleted in HJT without any ill effects on your PC, but it is your decision as it is your system.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Monitor] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe /Consumer
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCMService] "C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxtray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\Musicmatch Jukebox\mm_tray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] c:\Program Files\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\mmtask.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MoneyAgent] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\mnyexpr.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DellSupport] "C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe" /startup

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Finally, to make sure I am not missing something here, please run Silent Runners.

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runner's.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
    • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Hello again

The Silent Runners log is negative for malware.

There is a new Trojan downloader around that is replacing legitimate files with malware named exactly the same. This makes a visual inspection rather difficult as all appears to be OK. However the malware has a certain size and moves the legitimate files to a folder called bak. This tool will make a search of your PC for files of that exact size, and for any folders named bak

Please download:FindAWF

Save the tool to the desktop and run it. You will see a DOS screen throughout which will close and a file named awf.txt will open. Please post the awf.txt file in your reply.

Please note:-

If a DOS window does not stay open throughout the search (approx a minute) you need to change how the programme runs. Here’s how:
  • Locate the file
  • Right-click and select Properties
  • Select Compatibility and select Run this programme in compatibility mode for: Windows 98/Windows ME and click OK.
  • The tool should now work.

Hello again Dave

I'm happy to see that one is negative.

I am almost certain that this is not a malware issue, but before I let the OS and connectivity experts loose, please do this last scan just to make absolutely sure. This one is associated with Wareout.

This tool should remove rmdlagentuj from your PC, since it is a Trojan but uses userland rootkit techniques.

1. Download the file "rmdlagentuj.exe" from following location: Here

2. Execute the file "rmdlagentuj.exe" if it was successful you will get a message dialogue where you will be asked to reboot

Any better?
