SpywareDoctor and AVG AntiSpyware are similar products. They should not conflict.
You can use one as a "second opinion"

Right click an empty place on the desktop and select properties. Click on the desktop tab, then click the cutomize desktop button. Click the web tab and untick any webpages that are selected in the web pages window. Make sure the lock desktop items box is unticked. Click ok/apply/ok. See if that allows you to change your dektop wallpaper.

Copy the contents of the Code box to notepad.
Name the file deskout.reg
Save as type:All files
Save it some place where you will remember it, like My documents.

Double click on deskout.reg and say yes to the prompt.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop]

"NoAddingComponents"=-
"NoComponents"=-
"NoDeletingComponents"=-
"NoEditingComponents"=-
"NoCloseDragDropBands"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

"NoActiveDesktop"=-
"NoSaveSettings"=-
"ClassicShell"=-
"NoThemesTab"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=-

Restart the computer.

Go to Display properties and click the desktop tab.

Click the Customize Desktop Button.

Click the Web tab and remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box.
Apply.
Apply and Exit Display properties.

In display Properties > Desktop
Choose a new background color and picture. Apply.

Close Display properties. If you need to, click the desktop and press F5 to refresh.

Before I do what you said above. When i turn my computer off (when the desktop icons go away) I see the background i choose for a few seconds before comp shuts down. When i check the dektop properties it says that the image i choose is applied.

Yes. Well I suspect that the Active Desktop is a layer on top of your actual desktop.

The older versions could be dragged down untill you saw the cross in the upper right corner to close them with.

But the registry fix should work if that theory is correct. :whistling:

Arf. :whistling:

Can you post the exact error you get?

I can't imagine how displaying your desktop would cause an explorer error, but have you tried a different one?

Do you see the click here on the error prompt in your screenshot.

Can you post what shows up if you use that link.
Sometimes it will tell us which module caused the error.

[bleep] :whistling:

Can yo please make a Manual System Restore Point?
http://www.microsoft...sysrst.mspx#ETC

Then download and install IE7 from here:
http://www.microsoft...ds/default.mspx

Then reboot and let me know how it goes.

IE 7 has a bigger impact on XP then just a new browser.
I am hoping one of the side-effects will cure your problem.
From your screenshot we have to assume that explorer.exe itself is the faulting module.
The only way I can imagine that is if it crashes on a certain folder or filetype.
It will be a long and tedious search to find out which filetype that would be.
(Had it been a folder then I'm sure you would have noticed it crashes in the same one all the time)

I'll try IE7, asap. I have too much work at hand, this being grade 12.
