Hi,

My computer has just (this morning) become infected with a virus that pops up a "critical software error" in a balloon from a yellow warning triangle. On checking windows task manager the programs isamonitor.exe and isamini.exe are continually running in the background. I've tried "end processing" then but they come right back. I've also tried running Adaware and have McShield and AVG running as well but nothing will clear them. The AdAware files are up to date within the lst 10 days and the AVG updated this morning. I've also looked in "add/remove programs" and the only odd thing there is Virus Buster. Also ran CVS Shredder and that was clear. I've searched your site and have run Trojan Hunter which zapped 3 items. I then downloaded and ran HJT and SmitfarudFix. HJT ran fine and the log is below but SmitfraudFix would not run as it said the process.exe file was missing. I am using a portable to access the Internet as I do not want to connect the infected computer to the Internet. Can you help please. :whistling:

Thanks in advance

Russ

Hello. :whistling:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
  • Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #1 - Search by typing 1, and press Enter.
  • A text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
  • Please copy/paste the contents of C:\rapport.txt into your next reply along with a new Hijackthis log.
  • Do not run the other options of this tool yet until you are asked to do so!

Hello Russ,

Here's what we do next. :whistling:

You may want to print out these instructions or save it as a text document, and use them as a reference. If you have any questions regarding the fix, please ask us before proceeding. Please make sure that you follow this in the right order as I have listed.

=====================================

Download ATF Cleaner
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Do not run it yet. We will use this later.
Download AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Once installed, open the program.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • Under How to scan? all boxes should be selected.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software: all boxes should be checked.
    • Under Reports: click on Automatically generate report after every scan.
    • Under What to scan? select Scan every file.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
=====================================

Reboot into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer.
  • Before the Windows logo appear, tap F8 repeatedly.
  • A menu should appear, select Safe Mode from the menu using your arrow keys and then hit Enter on your keyboard.
  • This will take a while than usual, so just wait.
=====================================

Open the SmitfraudFix folder.
  • Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd.
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter to delete infected files.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Safe Mode again.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
  • The report can also be found here - C:\rapport.txt
  • NOTE : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
=====================================

Go to Start | Control Panel | Display | Desktop tab | Customize Desktop button | Web tab.
  • Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar.
  • If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button.
  • Click OK, then Apply, and lastly OK.
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

=====================================

Run ATF Cleaner
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser, do this also:
  • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

=====================================

Run Ewido Anti-Spyware
  • Please close all Windows, Programs or Browsers.
  • Open Ewido.
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • When scan has finished, at bottom of the screen click Apply all Actions.
  • Click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
=====================================

I am a bit concerned about going on to the Interet to update AVG with isamontior / isamini still running. Is there anyway to miss out the update step. I have loaded the latest AVG and adjusted the settings. I also already had AVG running and it updated daily (not last night) but it was an earlier version (6 months)

No it'll be fine.. we'll clean isamoto/isamini anyways after you download AVG AntiSpyware (not AVG AntiVirus).

Hi,

I ran the AVG Spyware update and it seemed to work okay. The three logs are below. During the course of going though your reply
1. A Disk Cleanup program popped up and started to run but I stopped it after circ 2 minutes. Is that one I should normally let run through when the system is clean?

2. There were no entries to delete in the section
Start | Control Panel | Display | Desktop tab | Customize Desktop button | Web tab ! Security info or something similar.

3. Evido – I assumed this is AVG gave the warning messages below which I accepted on both occasions

The file c:\System Volume Information\-restore-{B2274D3-F062-426E-B1F6-9338BC116202}-\RP1010\A0174710.exe/CSSecure.dll can not be quarantined because it is embedded in the archive C:\System Volume Information\-restore-{B2274D3-F062-426E-B1F6-9338BC116202}-\RP1010\A0174710.exe. Do you want to quarantine the whole archive?

The file C:\Documents and Settings\Alex\Desktop\Brutus-aet2.zip/BrutusA2.exe cannot be archive because it is embedded in the archive C:\Documents and Settings\Alex\Desktop\Brutus-aet2.zip. Do you want to quarantine the whole archive?

Also “1 trace detected in the following location HKU\S-1—521-1567011825-3652652152-3399203189- (couldn’t see the rest of the message)”

4. Finally when I rebooted there was a message saying there was a consistency error on the disk and wanting to run a ?restore unless I pressed a key in circa 10 seconds. I hit the key to end the process. Presumably if this occurs again when the system is clean then I should accept the offer?

I have checked the Task Manager and thankfully isamonitor and isamini are bothe not running and the Critical Error Message has not yet appeared

A Disk Cleanup program popped up and started to run but I stopped it after circ 2 minutes. Is that one I should normally let run through when the system is clean?

Did that happened while working with SmitfraudFix? If yes, then don't worry about it.

3. Evido – I assumed this is AVG gave the warning messages below which I accepted on both occasions

Yep, the program is really Ewido before, AVG just bought it that's why it has a new name now.

This is your system restore folder.. it does not matter if you choose yes or no on this alert, we're going to flush your system restore points later anyway.

Click yes.

Also “1 trace detected in the following location HKU\S-1—521-1567011825-3652652152-3399203189- (couldn’t see the rest of the message)”

Did it delete it?

Finally when I rebooted there was a message saying there was a consistency error on the disk and wanting to run a ?restore unless I pressed a key in circa 10 seconds. I hit the key to end the process. Presumably if this occurs again when the system is clean then I should accept the offer?

Hmm.. this message doesn't look familiar to me.. is this the exact message? Is it from a program, or just a Window's error message?

I have checked the Task Manager and thankfully isamonitor and isamini are bothe not running and the Critical Error Message has not yet appeared

Glad to hear that! :whistling:

First off, you have 2 AntiVirus programs running at the same time. Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

You currently have McAfee and AVG, please uninstall/disable one of them and leave the other.

=====================================

Please open HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and then place a checkmark beside each of these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {d869742a-e5d2-4624-96c7-aae26170665e} - C:\Program Files\MMediaCodec\isaddon.dll (file missing)
O16 - DPF: ADVFN 4v4 - http://www.advfn.com...p?pid=loadercab

If you're not the one who put this on your HOSTS file, then check it as well:

O1 - Hosts: 150.0.0.253 admin1
O1 - Hosts: 195.194.88.15 ncn

After placing all the checkmarks, close all windows (except HJT), and then hit Fix Checked. When it finishes, exit HJT.

=====================================

Then post a new Hijackthis log again.

Also, are there any reasons why you don't have any Service Packs installed?
Since everything looks fine now, then you're good to update to SP2.
Visit windowsupdate.com and install SP2 because if not, you'll just get reinfected again.

Jet,

Many thanks. I have removed McAfee via the Add/remove programs in Control Pane leaving just AVG as that was recommended by an IT friend / administrator at work.

Then removed all 4 items with Hijack.this (I think advfn was safe (as it is a stocks and shares program) and I had put in the two hosts addresses myself but no longer need them)

I have also accessed the Internet to download emails in AOL and watched activity through the Windows Task Manager – again no isamonitor or isamini. I can also see THguard running occasionally. When this is all cleaned up which of these programs should I have running to best protect myself in the future. (I have two teenage kids who are usually pretty reliable but I suspect caused this problem at 1am Friday morning)

When I rebooted I again got the blue screen and disk consistency warning. This time I let it go through and it ran for a few seconds and then said the disk was okay and gave me various sizes – a bit like the old chkdisk command. The task manager now mainly shows system idle at 98% and explorer at 2%. I have run a second hijackthis log must in case.

How do you learn how to interpret these logs - is there a book or website I could access?. When this is finished I plan to look at the my other computers on my network(wireless with 3 computers and a portable)

Hello again. :whistling:

Everything looks fine now! I'll give you some recommendations later in this post..

How do you learn how to interpret these logs - is there a book or website I could access?. When this is finished I plan to look at the my other computers on my network(wireless with 3 computers and a portable)

Actually Geekstogo offer a 'free' training. :blink: Click on this link to know more:

http://www.geekstogo...ware-t4817.html

Now that you're clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

1.) Re-Hide System Files and Folders:
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option
  • Click Yes to confirm
  • Click OK
2.) Reset and Re-enable your System Restore

We need to do this to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Click Start » Run » ( type: SYSDM.CPL ) » OK
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply.
  • Uncheck - Turn off System Restore.
  • Click OK.
You have now flushed your previous System Restore points, so we will make a new one again since your computer is already clean.
  • Go to Start » All Programs » Accessories » System Tools, and select System Restore
  • In the System Restore prompt, select: Create a restore point
  • Click Next
  • Give a description to the new Restore Point. (Something like: Clean PC)
  • Click Create
  • Then close the window
3.) How to Prevent Re-Infection

Please take your time reading on this list, it is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Windows Updates (a must!) - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this, open Internet Explorer, then and select Tools » Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • Firewall (a must!) - It is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Kerio and ZoneAlarm.
  • Anti-Virus (a must!) - It is also a must have. Two good programs are Avast and AVG, they're both free.
    Note: You must only use 1 (one) AV because if you have 2 AVs, it will conflict with each other and will only make your system slow.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.
