I have tried to install this all-in-one from the disc, following all directions as far as when to plug the printer to the computer etc.

I am on a Toshiba Satellite MJ100 running XP home.

When I plug in the USB I get a message "USB device not recognized"

I need to print my hubby's resume!!!

Please help!

in new threads please state: computer model, opperating system, and age

(guessing that this is XP os)

with printers, often one needs to fully install the program and then attach the printer, doing it the other way results in the printer not being recognised, two ideas then

to install the right or missing driver

runbox command
- press: winkey + r
- paste this: devmgmt.msc
- press: enter
- click icon: disks dives
- see if there is a yellow blob on the icon
(means driver is missing)
- right hand click: the yellow blob icon
- choose uninstall
- top of the same window click: action
- click: scan for hardware changes
(if prompted, direct the search to cd)
(if reprompted redirect to inside the cd, any file that looks like drivers)

to uninstall, reinstall program of printer before connecting the printer

runbox command
- press: winkey + r
- paste this: appwiz.cpl
- press: enter
(the window will then show installed programs)
- delete the program of this uninstallable printer
- disconnect the printer from the computer
- turn off the computer
- turn on the computer again
- put the printer's installation cd in the computer
- run and install the program
- after the program has finished installing or when prompted connect the printer, not before, (printer should be on when connecting it)

still not right...go here ...and click on the downloads section...you will have to select a series of options..start at the top and on the 3 rd one down you will be asked to pick a model...your isn't there or you have not give me the right info...get any updated drivers for your computer...I suspect its a USB controler issue...

I'm really confused now!!

The computer is a Toshiba Satellite M100-JG2.

I went to the Canadian Toshiba site, and can't find it there?? I bought it this past June so that is very weird.

Google gave me confirmation that I am not losing my mind

Why can't I find information on a four-month old computer??

as a rule of thumb when thing cannnot install, it isn't the computer's but the product's drivers we need here, in this case it is

HP Photosmart C3100

so it would be going to them(not toshiba)

please, you have not replied to those things I asked you to do in my first post, perhaps if I make that clearer for you

runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste this: devmgmt.msc
- press: enter
devmgmt.msc = devicemanagement
this shows you if the photosmart driver is recognised,
yellow blobs are unrecognised drivers

runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste this: appwiz.cpl
- press: enter
appwiz.cpl is add/remove programs
this shows you if the photosmart program if any is installed

I really cannot make it simplier
the idea is to uninstall the program from the comp and the reinstalling it correctly by first running the program from the cd and then afterwards connecting the printer switched on. A lot of people do it in the wrong order connecting products first so the computer having no programs missreads the product as in this case

hope this makes my first post clearer, I am doing this problem often enough it seems
also, please contact hp about this, they will probably give you the same advice, here is the link:

My initial post did have most of the information that you say wasn't there, the only thing missing was the age of the computer, and that has been added in follow up posts since then.

Anyway, here it is again . . .

The computer is a Toshiba M100-JG2.
It was purchased in June 2006.
It is running XP home.

I will try your other suggestions now.

I DID follow the instructions very carefully. The printer was NOT connected to the computer until I was directed to do so. I had also uninstalled and tried to reinstall twice before I posted. I do know that follow the order exactly is important.

Here I go to try again.

sorry my english, I explain
sometimes when the install is done the wrong way, ie the device is connected before installing the software, XP's plug and play jumps through its list of drivers and thnks your printer is something else like a hairdrier, so not only must the installation be fully done before connecting the device but also the device must be switch on while doing so for the same reason.

btw is the printer copying correctly, without connecting it to the comp you can still photocopy without problem I hope

I am ready to throw this printer out the window -- I'm not at all impressed.

I have followed your directions, installing and reinstalling many times, still without any success.

When it directs me to plug in the printer I get this message:

! USB device not recognized.
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it.

The only option available at that point is "if you are unable to connect click to finish installing" which gets me nowhere.

I am so frustrated. I can copy with it but that is all.

Me too, I am beginning to think that the window option is not a bad idea, honestly I am giving up passing the buck to someone else here but if I were you now I would take it back to the shop saying that it is broken. btw does the photosmart site report any bugs or incompatibility problems.

any ideas someone

I had problems installing the software for a H-P all-in-one Officejet 6210 on a intel 3.0 desktop with a XP SP1 plus the SP2 update. It seemed i could not get the drivers to install from the H-P printer drivers CD. I tried downloading drivers from the H-P website and they worked perfectly. You might try it as they may have updated the software for SP2.
