Hi pwt5,

That Ad-Aware SE scan shows only cookies so lets remove them.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please remove the following tools that we installed whilst cleaning your computer:

Combofix.exe
SmitfraudFix
VundoFix.exe
Killbox.exe
Brute Force Uninstaller and the C:\BFU folder.
Blacklight
WinPFind2.exe
The Avenger and avenger.exe
FileFind.exe
C:\BackupReg.reg

Congratulations. Your log appears to be clean. :whistling:

The slowness of MS Word opening doesn't appear to be Malware related. There could be many things that is causing this from memory problems to file fragmentation. I see that you still have AVG Anti-Spyware and TrojanHunter installed with their real-time protection enabled of both products. Please either remove one of these programs or disable real-time protection on one of those products to help speed up your system. You could try trimming your start-up programs as I suggested in Post#23 or start a thread in the Windows XP, 2000, 2003, NT forum and include that you have been given the all clear in the Malware Removal forum.

What Anti-Virus is best.... hmmm.... This is not as easy to answer as you may believe.

All Anti-Virus programs when having real-time scanning (scan on file open or close) options enabled will eat up some processing time and slow the system down, though the trade-off of system speed versus protection is really a no-brainer. Simply put, it would be in your best interest to have an Anti- Virus program installed and running. Whether you wish to have a paid subscription to a product or not is your choice as there are good free ones available as well as paid products.

My opinion for a subscribed Anti-Virus product would be NOD32 (30 day free trial included) and for a free product would be Avast Home Edition or AVG Anti-Virus.

If you choose to install and use one of these, then please ensure that Nortons Anti-Virus is completely removed first, as having more than one Anti-Virus running with real-time protection enabled can actually conflict with each other and cause problems with the computer.

Please follow these Tips to prevent a possible infection or re-infection.

Many computers become infected because of unpatched Operating Systems.

Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly.

Download, install AND update the following free programs. It is important to keep all anti-malware programs updated. Please update and scan with these at least once a week.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 2 free ones available for personal use:It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Glad to be of help and safe surfing.
