Hi

I'm hoping someone will be able to help with removal of the last few instances of Adware.Look2me spyware which I just cannot get rid of. It's on an updated Windows ME system which unfortunately cannot be upgraded to XP but is nevertheless needed on a daily basis. I'm trying to avoid having to do a new install.

I've searched all the forums here and have found many things which have helped to remove much of the spyware on the system but the ones left are proving particularly stubborn. The automated tools available for killing Look2me seem to work on 2000/XP only so I'm wondering whether it needs manual intervention?

I've run updated versions of Spybot, Trojanhunter and AVG and removed everything but Ad-aware continues to find two permanent instances plus a few others after each reboot. When the scan runs, as it finds each instance it pops up a dialog box saying "Explorer has experienced an error in < unknown> or "Rundll32 has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL". After the scan if I try to remove Adaware.Look2Me it hangs on "DELETING" and I end up having to crash the application. The next time they are still there again.

If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it. Ad-aware and HiJackThis logs are listed below.

Many thanks

Berney

Please download L2m9xfix here:
http://swandog46.gee...om/l2m9xfix.exe

Save it to the desktop and run it. Extract the files, and then open the l2m9xfix folder you just created and run RunThis.bat.

A window will open, and your desktop will disappear, then reappear. Please be patient until the batch says it is completed.

Then please restart your computer, and post a new HijackThis log as well as the entire text of the log.txt file which should be in the same folder as RunThis.bat.

Regards,

Thanks for replying, sorry about the delay, I'm only able to get on to the problem computer after 6pm UK time.

Here are the things you asked for, I ran the scans in normal mode, I hope that was right. (I have tried l2m9xfix previously which seemed to find something but the adware.look2me spyware was still there afterwards.)

Thanks again

Berney

Very good.

Now run HijackThis and put a checkmark before the folowing items:

R3 - URLSearchHook: DeskbarBHO - {A8B28872-3324-4CD2-8AA3-7D555C872D96} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\DESKBAR\DESKBAR.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: eBay Toolbar - {92085AD4-F48A-450D-BD93-B28CC7DF67CE} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\EBAY\EBAY TOOLBAR2\EBAYTB.DLL (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {C004DEC2-2623-438e-9CA2-C9043AB28508} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\Updreg.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DXM6Patch_981116] C:\WINDOWS\p_981116.exe /Q:A
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\ERRORSAFE FREE\UERS.EXE" /min
O4 - Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LDMConf.exe

Then click Fix checked, reboot and delete these folders:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\DESKBAR
C:\PROGRAM FILES\ERRORSAFE FREE

Now it should stay away.
Let me know.

Hi Pieter

I'll try this as soon as I get home this evening and report then. By the way, the computer was powered off last night and will need to reboot - I presume this doesn't affect your suggestions.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi Pieter

Well, I did as you suggested and it seems to have worked!! I fixed the issues using HJT, then rebooted and re-ran Hijack, followed by Adaware SE which found nothing other than some references in the C:/_RESTORE/TEMP folder. I removed these by disabling and reenabling system restore to clear the restore points.

All now seems good apart from one minor thing - on shutting down the system I get a dialog box saying that the task DDHELPWNDCLASS cannot be ended (click WAIT, END or CANCEL). Clicking END usually halts it but sometimes it freezes. I believe this task has something to do with DirectX and as this behaviour only started since the spyware infection I'm assuming it had could have modified something. I think I need to reinstall DirectX to get rid of this problem. A great improvement though - no more pop-ups and it runs faster!!

I really appreciate your help with this, many thanks for your time. The final HJT log is listed below. It looks good to me, hopefully to you too!!

Best Regards

Berney

Hi Berney,

Log looks OK where it comes to L2M.
I would feel better if you fixed these two as well though:

O16 - DPF: {88D758A3-D33B-45FD-91E3-67749B4057FA} - http://dm.screensave.../sinstaller.cab
O16 - DPF: {E055C02E-6258-40FF-80A7-3BDA52FACAD7} (Installer Class) - http://activex.matca.../speedtest2.dll

They are dubious at best.

Let me know if re-installing DirectX solves the other problem.
I think your diagnosis is spot on. :whistling:

Hi Pieter

I removed the other items you suggested and reran HJT (log is below). I also tried reinstalling DirectX and the other shutdown problem seems much improved too.

Once again, many thanks for your help in getting this resolved.

Best Regards

Berney
