Ah what a godsend it is to have guys like you around to help in my hour of need. My Niece recently visited me and was using various chat and messenger services including (gasp) MSN. Since then I believe I have been hijacked by some form of Trojan. Symptoms are there seems to be a host file denying me access to any online scanners or anti virus information. I was lucky to get into here. Task manager and CMD just shut themselves down as soon as I open them. Also, MSN now loads itself at startup no matter wheteher I configure it to do so or not.
Please take a look at my hijackthis log, any help you can provide, I will be endlessly grateful for. Thankyou.

Hi Fenris

Welcome to geekstogo!

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

You are running an out-of-date version of HijackThis; can you please download a new copy (there is a link in my signature), unzip it, and replace your existing copy with the new version.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\System32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\System32\mcsv.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NDAv] C:\WINDOWS\System32\csnss.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SDAv] C:\WINDOWS\svhost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [snpstd] C:\WINDOWS\vsnpstd.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NDAv] C:\WINDOWS\System32\csnss.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SDAv] C:\WINDOWS\svhost.exe
O4 - Startup: Reboot.exe
O9 - Extra button: Research (HKLM)
O9 - Extra button: Messenger (HKLM)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mcsv.com<--Delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\csnss.exe<--Delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\svhost.exe<--Delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\vsnpstd.exe<--Delete this file

Exit Explorer,

Reboot as normal .

1. Download the CCleaner unzip the file to install.
2. Open CCleaner.
3. Place a check by everything in the Applications tab.
4. Place a check by Internet Explorer, Windows explorer, and System in the Windows tab.
5. Hit the button that says Run CCleaner

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp

Please post the logs From both virus scans and HJT.log we will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Thankyou for your reply Thatman and I apologise for not complying with your initial requirements. You said I have to reveal the hidden files but since getting this virus/worm I have been locked out of a lot of functions. One of them is the option to reveal hidden files and fiolders. Normally there is the option in My Computer under the tools / folder options but is is not present now. Any ideas?

Thanks again for your help, it is deeply appreciated.

Hi Fenris

For anyone using Windows XP, 'Search' will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - Click here to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Post a new HJT.Log
