Problems with XP SP2 installation

Hello,
I have a HP Pavillon a640n running XP OS with SP1.
I checked the HP site and installed all the patches they recommend
before upgrading to SP2.
After installing SP2 Windows would not start. It did give me the option to
load in safe mode which I did and uninstalled SP2 successfully.

I run AVG virus software and Spyware Blaster for spyware.
Also Foxfire as my web browser.
What do I need to check for before I try installation again?
