I don't know what happened, one day my computer lost it's icons, start menu, taskbar, and right click functionality on the desktop background. I looked in the task manager, the only thing I could access by pressing ctrl+del+alt, and explorer.exe was missing. I saw explorer was still listed in C:\ Windows but not in the processes in task manager. I can't go to system restore as well as a few other programs. Here's my Hijackthis log:

Hi ctdgcrsntf,

Run HijackThis again and put a checkmark before the following items:

Then click Fix checked, reboot the computer and download SP2 here:
http://www.microsoft...;displaylang=en

Select the correct language if that isn't english.

Post back with a new HijackThis log and a update on how the computer is running.

Regards,

Hi, still no start menu, taskbar, or icons. My computer runs slowly which I think is mainly because I have aol which takes forever to download anything. I started the download of SP2 but I don't know how I'm going to get to finish downloading it as it says it will take 25 hours to download! That means no one will be able to call for over a day and on top of that aol usually goes off, ending downloads before they finish, if anyone calls! Well here is my Hijackthis log:

25 hours is a looooong time. :whistling:

You could consider ordering the CD with SP2
http://www.microsoft...us/default.mspx

But I'm afraid it's the most important part of the fix.
It will provide you with the latest versions of all the files you are missing.

During the download it just said the file is not a valid win32 application so it couldn't install SP2.
I remember I had the file before and it got uninstalled [that was after the desktop was messed up] I have some program on my computer to reinstall deleted files, I have to find it first and then I'll check to see if SP2 is there. Never mind, I couldn't recover SP2.

Do you have a XP CD ?

You can always have a look here and see if that works for you:

Yes, I have a XP cd. I tried using it before to fix the computer but couldn't because I don't have a product key as XP was already preinstalled on my computer when I got it.

OK. You won't need the key for this.

Click Start > Run > and copy this command into the window:
sfc /scannow
click OK to execute the command.

Windows will check if all important files are present in the correct version.
It may prompt you fo the CD if one needs to be replaced.

Let me know if it helps.

I did the scan, the window came up like it is suppose to and it finished but nothing happened. Nothing came up after it was done, I'm sure something is suppose to come up but it didn't.

Only if it finds something missing will it come up.
So, if it didn't that is a good sign..... I guess. :whistling:

I think I will need to know how you decide on installing SP2
It is clear to me that this has to be done.

I emailed Microsoft yesterday to see if there is another way for me to get SP2 as it takes 4-6 weeks
just to send the cd! I probably will just end up buying the cd at a store this weekend. Four to six
weeks is just too long to wait. I was wondering though if it is possible to copy SP2 on a cd from
my other computer and then install it on the one that needs it.

I think that is possible using amethod similar to this one:
http://www.winsupers..._slipstream.asp

But would you mind asking that in the OS forums?
http://www.geekstogo...2003_NT-f5.html
It is not something I am comfortable enough with to help others.

I think I'm just going to wait for my response from microsoft and if I don't get that today I'll see if i can buy SP2 at a store first, I don't have a cd to burn now anyways so I might as well wait to see if SP2 is available.

OK. I really think it is the way to repair your system and you will need it to stay safe as well.

Let me know if and when you need more help. :whistling:

Hi. I downloaded a program today that is suppose to speed up download times and save downloads so you can resume them at the same spot they were at before a connection is dropped, which is good because I have aol which will sometimes go off. I am using it to try to download SP2 again, hopefully it will work. It still takes quite a long time to download so I will have to leave it downloading overnight. If it doesn't work, hopefully it will, I will have to buy the cd. My next response probably won't be until late Saturday or sometime Sunday as I will have to wait and see if SP2 successfully downloads. Thanks for your help so far!
