You do know to change drives you just type in the drive letter and :
eg C:>g:
Your drive does show as F & G in your mums computer ?
did you say you had a desktop also or is that your mums you mean

Yes, I understand that. My hard drive is from a Sony Vaio Laptop. My Mom's computer is a Dell Desktop.

Sorry if I sound a bit odd but I want to make sure I am on the right track.
If you connect your drive to your mums computer I would expect your drive to show as E:
Your mums drive as C: her cd/dvd as D: your partition drive as E & F
not F and G as it is not normal to drop a drive letter.

I connected the drive to my mom's desktop via the enclosure which I bought at CompUSA and hooked it up. When I click onto 'my computer' it shows the drive as two drives, F and G because my mom's CD drive is D and her DVD drive is E.

Ok so can you access f or g from the command prompt ?
If not then lets try the jumpers. They are normally on the back of the drive
near the power plug. On your drive look for a sticker that shows how to set the drive as a master or a slave.

As i said a usb drive does not need jumpers but yours is not a true usb drive so if you can not access G then try the jumpers.
If this fails then we look at burning a boot cd and see what it can do.

I will take a look at the drive tomorrow.

Hi Jeris
One thing that may help with your drive is if you can open the case and get the hard drive cooler and then transfer data over a network (i assume you have 2 computers)
If you put the drive in a desktop you should be able to recover all data if the drive spins. If you need help in this let me know

Hi Peterm,

Okay, I went out and got myself an enclosure from CompUSA for my drive. I took out the hard drive from the laptop and stuck it in, hooked everything up to my PC using the two USB cords supplied. I turned on my PC and went to My Computer, and although I see the drive(s) there--F: and G:--I cannot access it b/c the computer says that the drive is not formatted. "Format now?" I press no.

What next? =(

This usually means the partition is damaged and all the data is in RAW format. Use something like Ontrack Easy Recovery and you will be able to recover it.

Okay, peterm, i see the stickers on the drive designating the drive as 'device0, jumper device 1, or cable sel.

However, i looked on the back of the drive and there is nothing...i'm sorry i don't know where else to look. I have a hitachi travelstar drive. are you familiar with this type?

If you look at the link I showed you they look like they have no jumper for master.
We need you to get a jumper and put it on for slave. If you have a friend with an old computer you can pull a jumper off a drive or the main board.
In this pic the green part is the jumper - they come in all colours

I know this is an old posting but I thought I'd mention it as it may help others. I bought a refurbished Sony Viao and it came up with Operating System not found. I am concerned that this is a problem that many Sony Vaios have. I am under warranty though. I only had it for 2 months and if it going to do this a lot there is no point having it.

Sorry to hear that you are having a problem with your Sony Vaio but I am happy to hear that it is still under warranty.

This type of issue can happen with any computer whatever the brand name, desktop or notebook, two prime examples of what can cause this are a failed HDD (hard drive) and a corrupt or damaged OS (operating system).
A failed HDD can happen even with a new computer so as your Sony is refurbished you have no way of knowing if the unit was well looked after previously, a corrupt or damaged OS is commonly down to something that the user has done either by deleting or changing something that they should not have done or malware attack due to something that the user has downloaded.
I hope you have no problem getting it sorted under warranty and that you have better luck with the replacement item.
