My hard drive just works away doing something but I can not tell what. I hope something jumps out to you from my HiJack log. I did all the scans in the "you must read this before..." page and only Panda ActiveScan came up with anything:

Incident Status Location

Potentially unwanted tool:application/alfacleaner Disinfected HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN\ALFACLEANER
Spyware:Cookie/2o7 Disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Brad Sweeney\Cookies\brad sweeney@2o7[2].txt
Spyware:Cookie/Serving-sys

Then the HiJack log:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 7:38:16 PM, on 10/16/2006
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)

Hi Jay,

Let's see if we can calm it down a bit.
The drive will always have tasks that you may not be aware off.

Run HijackTHis and put checkmarks before the following items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
O4 - Global Startup: NkbMonitor.exe.lnk = C:\Program Files\Nikon\PictureProject\NkbMonitor.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O15 - Trusted Zone: www.iwon.com

Click Fix checked and reboot when you are done.

After the reboot go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove all the ViewPoint Software.

Let me know if that helps a bit.

Thanks for the help. At first it did seem to calm it down a bit but after just a short time it is back at it again. And by running all the time I don't mean a burst here and there as if something is running in the background...more like hard working as if it were opening an application. The machine is about two years old and the change was very dramatic one day so I know something changed...I just can't figure out what. Any other thoughts?

Let's check a bit deeper.

1. Download combofix http://download.blee...Bs/combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not click on combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

There is something in there that I don't recognize.

1. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the contents of the quote box below into a new Notepad file. Save it with file name options.txt and save as file type: all files to your desktop.

RegSearch Options File

[Search]
{e57ce738-33e8-4c51-8354-bb4de9d215d1}

[Exclude]

[Options]
Filter=KVDLUI

2. Download Registry Search to your desktop.
  • Right click on the compressed RegSearch folder, and choose "Extract All". In the box that pops open, click "Next", then "Next" again, and then "Finish". You now have another RegSearch folder on your desktop.
  • Open the new folder, and double click on regsearch.exe
  • Click "Import" in the lower left corner and browse to the options.txt file that you just saved on your desktop. Do not choose the one in the RegSearch folder itself.
  • Click OK and Registry Search will scan your registry for the file(s), and a Notepad box will open with a report.
  • Please reply here with the entire contents of the Notepad file from RegSearch.

We'll need to find out what file is associated with this entry, so it takes another step.

Click Start > Run and copy this command into the box:

regedit.exe /e C:\upnpmonitor.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{e57ce738-33e8-4c51-8354-bb4de9d215d1}"

and click OK to exceute.
Doing this successfully will create the file C:\upnpmonitor.txt
Find that file and post the content.

It looks legit enough.

To make sure can you surf to:
http://www.virustotal.com/vt/
and upload this file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\upnpui.dll

I think it will turn out to be the real MicroSoft file, but I want to make sure.

Is it that annoying?

I'm thinking it might be a hardware problem.

I guess my fear is that all of the reading and writing it is doing will cause a shorter life for the drive. If not I can live with it. Thank you so much for your help...at least I know it's clean!
Thanks.
