We always put the PC into standby overnight (via the 'sleep' keyboard key) and press the power button to open it up again in the morning. This has been working fine.

Now when coming out of standby, the screen power light comes on, the PC's fan & hard drive come on, but nothing on the screen.

However, if we move the mouse while it is powering up, the Welcome screen will appear, but when clicking on a user, the screen goes black again. It will respond to the keyboard, so 'Window Start Button' + L will bring up the welcome screen again.

The only way round this is a reboot.

I've installed the latest video drivers but it made no difference.

Thanks

Rob

welcome to geektogo
questions:
- what type computer
- is it xp home or pro
- how old is the computer

ideas
- have you thought of restoring the computer to point prior to the problem
- have you tried while the computer is disconnected from the internet
going to msconfig and (after recording which starts are enebled) disabling the startup to see one of those is causing this
- have you looked at you add/remove control to see if there are some program(s)
