Hi all, just found this website through a friend who has been helping me try and kick this issue. About 2 weeks ago I started to get these pop-ups "... By OuterInfo", Ad-Aware started to find this PuritySCAN thing, and the last 4 days or so I keep getting an AVG pop up saying that a virus is detected, the Generic2 trojan.

Here is my HijackThis log. One note, I have been unable to restart my computer in safe mode because my normal login password to startup for some reason is not working in safe mode??? This is a work laptop that I also use at home, it's my only computer.

Hello,

I notice that you have Windows Defender running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. You can re-enable this when your computer is already clean.

Disable Windows Defender
  • Go to Tools » General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options
  • Uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended)
Then, in the toolbar across the top there is a little downpointing arrow next to the question mark icon.
Click on that, get a drop down list. One of the options is to exit Windows Defender.
Click on that, and there will be a pop up asking if you are sure you want to exit. Click Yes/OK.

=====================================

Please open HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and then place a checkmark beside each of these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - SOFTWARE - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2E3F8167-1D8C-725A-81DF-1F349773E59F} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\xtuv.dll

After placing all the checkmarks, close all windows (except HJT), and then hit Fix Checked. When it finishes, exit HJT.

=====================================

I want you to set Windows to show hidden files and folders, click here to learn how.

=====================================

Locate and delete the following file(s), if present :

C:\WINDOWS\system32\xtuv.dll

=====================================

Download ATF Cleaner
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser, do this also:
  • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Run an online scan at Panda's ActiveScan
  • Please go here using Internet Explorer.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
  • A new window will open, click the big Check Now button.
    • Enter your Country.
    • Enter your State/Province.
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send.
    • Select either Home User or Company.
    • Click the big Scan Now button.
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan.
  • When the download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan.
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
  • Post the Panda report along with a new Hijackthis log.

Hello, thanks for helping me with this, I really appreciate it. I guess you didn't want me to reboot at any time since you didn't mention it, so I didn't yet.

Why do web pages look different now?

Here's the Panda scan:

Incident Status Location

Potentially unwanted tool:application/mywebsearch Not disinfected c:\windows\system32\f3PSSavr.scr
Adware:adware/sidesearch Not disinfected c:\program files\Lycos
Adware:adware/wintools Not disinfected Windows Registry
Potentially unwanted tool:application/funweb Not disinfected hkey_classes_root\clsid\{00A6FAF6-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D}
Adware:adware/ist.sidefind Not disinfected Windows Registry

And the HJT results:

What do you mean? In what ways they are different? Also, you mentioned that some look different in Firefox, yes I think that's the problem. Because some websites/pages use ActiveX, and Firefox doesn't use ActiveX.

Hello again. Thanks again for helping me with this.

Well, they look different in a basic way, like no pictures. ESPN.com for example looks completely different. It's basically a white screen with a bunch of links on it. This site looks different too. In IE it's fancy and blue and such, but in Firefox now it's just white with the links and words. It used to be fine in Firefox, but it switched to this way the other day. I think it was the ATF-cleaner??? Can we switch it back?

I did all you said. There were no Lycos things to be removed, should there have been?

I've added some programs since my last HJT log, so you might see that stuff, a firewall, SpywareBlaster and the like.

Hi,

Well, they look different in a basic way, like no pictures. ESPN.com for example looks completely different. It's basically a white screen with a bunch of links on it. This site looks different too. In IE it's fancy and blue and such, but in Firefox now it's just white with the links and words. It used to be fine in Firefox, but it switched to this way the other day. I think it was the ATF-cleaner??? Can we switch it back?

That site looks fine when I tested it (with Firefox). Are you sure you have Javascript enabled? Also, I don't think that ATF Cleaner had caused this problem, because it will only delete temp files, and it should not affect any other programs.
Can you give me a screenshot of some websites that doesn't look right?

I did all you said. There were no Lycos things to be removed, should there have been?

If you're talking about the folder, then I think the uninstaller got it already.

==

All looks fine now, just one thing that I see.. and it's very important!

I notice from your log that you are running two different Anti-Virus programs with Auto-Protect enabled!

AVG and Norton

Rather than giving you extra protection, this can significantly reduce the performance and effectiveness of both programs as they all too often conflict with each other.

I would strongly advise you to only have one Anti-Virus with the Auto-Protect feature running at any one time!

I would advise you to disable the "Auto-Protect" feature of one of your Anti-Virus programs. Although when updating your virus definitions, don't forget to update both scanners!

If you decide to only keep one Anti-Virus installed,
you should uninstall the other(s) through the Add or Remove Programs option in Control Panel.

Interesting, I didn't even realize I had Norton. I think it must have been already on the computer from my work. I wonder if I could even remove it?

Two questions: How do I take a screen shot and how do I enable Javascript?

Thanks again!

Well never mind on the Javascript question, I found the setting and they are enabled. So I guess I just need to know how to do a screen shot and maybe you can help me from there.

And I cannot remove Symantec without a password cause I'm just a 'client' user. I figure it was put on byt the school I work at. So I removed AVG. Too bad, I liked AVG.

Well if that's the situation, then you can just ask your admin or something to remove it and then install AVG if you really like it. :whistling:

As for creating screenshots:

1. Click the window you want to take a screenshot (so this should be your Firefox window with the website you're having problems)

2. Press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard (usually it is above the arrows pad)

3. Open Paint.

4. Click "Edit" then "Paste".

5. Viola, you have now your screenshot! :blink: Just save it and then post it here.

It looks like the websites are not fully loaded.. the background images are not there..

Have you tried disabling your extensions and then see if it works fine?

EDIT: Oh, looks like it was solved.
