[DFS]

Hi all, just found this website through a friend who has been helping me try and kick this issue. About 2 weeks ago I started to get these pop-ups "... By OuterInfo", Ad-Aware started to find this PuritySCAN thing, and the last 4 days or so I keep getting an AVG pop up saying that a virus is detected, the Generic2 trojan.

Here is my HijackThis log. One note, I have been unable to restart my computer in safe mode because my normal login password to startup for some reason is not working in safe mode??? This is a work laptop that I also use at home, it's my only computer.

I notice that you have Windows Defender running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. You can re-enable this when your computer is already clean.

Disable Windows Defender

• Go to Tools » General Settings
• Scroll down to Real-time protection options
• Uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended)

Then, in the toolbar across the top there is a little downpointing arrow next to the question mark icon.
Click on that, get a drop down list. One of the options is to exit Windows Defender.
Click on that, and there will be a pop up asking if you are sure you want to exit. Click Yes/OK.

What do you mean? In what ways they are different? Also, you mentioned that some look different in Firefox, yes I think that's the problem. Because some websites/pages use ActiveX, and Firefox doesn't use ActiveX.

Well, they look different in a basic way, like no pictures. ESPN.com for example looks completely different. It's basically a white screen with a bunch of links on it. This site looks different too. In IE it's fancy and blue and such, but in Firefox now it's just white with the links and words. It used to be fine in Firefox, but it switched to this way the other day. I think it was the ATF-cleaner??? Can we switch it back?

I did all you said. There were no Lycos things to be removed, should there have been?

That site looks fine when I tested it (with Firefox). Are you sure you have Javascript enabled? Also, I don't think that ATF Cleaner had caused this problem, because it will only delete temp files, and it should not affect any other programs.

I notice from your log that you are running two different Anti-Virus programs with Auto-Protect enabled!

AVG and Norton

Rather than giving you extra protection, this can significantly reduce the performance and effectiveness of both programs as they all too often conflict with each other.

I would strongly advise you to only have one Anti-Virus with the Auto-Protect feature running at any one time!

I would advise you to disable the "Auto-Protect" feature of one of your Anti-Virus programs. Although when updating your virus definitions, don't forget to update both scanners!

If you decide to only keep one Anti-Virus installed,
you should uninstall the other(s) through the Add or Remove Programs option in Control Panel.

Well if that's the situation, then you can just ask your admin or something to remove it and then install AVG if you really like it.

As for creating screenshots:

1. Click the window you want to take a screenshot (so this should be your Firefox window with the website you're having problems)

2. Press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard (usually it is above the arrows pad)

3. Open Paint.

4. Click "Edit" then "Paste".

5. Viola, you have now your screenshot! Just save it and then post it here.

Ummmm......ok. I took those screen shots today at work. I get home and fire up the laptop and now the websites look like they should in Firefox, fine again??? I didn't do anything, I'm confused...

It looks like the websites are not fully loaded.. the background images are not there..

Have you tried disabling your extensions and then see if it works fine?
