Hi there,
can someone please help. I am experiencing difficulties with my computer. I am unable to right click on the desktop, my search command is missing form the start menu and i can no longer restore the computer to an earlier time.
Before I was unable to open the Windows task manager but I went into safe mode and that is no longer a problem. Can someone help me please?

Hi BReal59,

This is a very busy forum as you may have noticed and it was not a smart move to bump your topic.
Most of our helpers look for topics with 0 replies.
So yours was now very likely to be missed.

First download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.
Also post a new HijackThis log when you are done.

Regards,

thanks for your help Metallica
I am able to open Registry editor under the run command, but I am still not able to use System restore and I can still not right click on the desktop, do you have any solutions please? I also have a backup folder that has appeared on the desktop since I performed the operations on Hijack this. Should I delete them?

Please don't delete the backups yet.
They are the ones made by HijackThis.
The chance we may need them is small but present.

Check here how to "unhide" files and folders: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=192
After doing so find desktop.ini
You can rightclick the file and open with ... notepad
Post the content of that file.

Also let me know what happens exactly if you try and use System Restore.
Not that i would like you to use it right now :whistling:

ok Metallica sorry for double posting, I was able to open desktop.ini with notepad but there was no content inside the file. It was completely empty.
When I try to open System Restore a notice appears asking if i want to turn on system restore. After clicking yes, i uncheck turn off system restore and press aply but i get a notice that says ''system restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives. Please restart your machine and try again.''

I have a feeling some system files have gone AWOL.

Click Start > Run > and copy this command:
sfc /scannow
Click OK to execute.
Windows will start checking if all the important files are present.
It may prompt you for the Windows CD.

Hi Metalica
Windows file protection checked that all protected Windows versions are intact and in their original versions. Then I searched for desktop.ini and opened it with notepad and the file is still empty.

Run notepad and copyu the part in bold below into the file:

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

[ExtShellFolderViews]
Default={5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}
{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}={5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}

[DeleteOnCopy]

Then save that file to your desktop. Then rightclick the file, select Properties and put a checkmark in the "Hidden" box

Reboot and let me know if you can now rightclick the desktop.
