Hi, I have a Sony RDR-GXD500 DVD recorder, and Verbatim DVD+RWs, but when I try to record something, the DVD recorder says that the "disc is not recordable" and asks me to insert another one. The discs are brand new and unused.

What's the problem?

are you sure your drive will work with "+" format disks? Maybe it only works with "-" format disks? Also it could be the drive is starting to die or maybe it's dirty or just plain doesn't like verbatim disks... I've seen that alot with cdr/cdrw where the brand of disk makes a big difference with some drives...

sometimes just getting the newest drivers and firmware will get the drive to recognise some media that it didn't recognise before

The recorder is definitely compatible with + and - RW discs. I can't find any brand compatibility information or firmware updates on the Sony website.
I should have said this before but the recorder works perfectly with other brands of DVD+RWs (JVC for one, I can't remember the names of the others).

I have always bought Verbatim DVD media for use with my computer because they are high quality have a good reputation, but now I am a bit worried as to why they don't work in my Sony recorder!

the workaround for this is to use media that works for now and check back with sony once in awhile to check for updated firmware and drivers....
