Hi, this one interests me
remember I am working blind so bare with me
please do write in capital letters(I don't mind but other here hate it
also if you haven't mentioned it yet:
- what model of computer
- what os, XPpro or home
- how old is it

I am guessing here, XPpro and oldish laptop
a silly idea that sometimes works
- take out the battery
- plug the laptop to the mains
- turn on the computer
(battery is playing up)

I am hoping that it is the boot which has become corrupted as it is the simplest possibility, a repair with xp cd then

if this fails, are you good with a screwdriver

Usually a blinking dash in the upper left hand corner of the screen means the computer cannot find the boot files for the operating system. The computer sees the drive but it doesn't see anything on the drive. This is usually caused by bad sectors in the first part of the hard drive. You will probably need to replace the hard drive and reinstall windows on the new HD.

to restore missing boot files when the boot is corrupted

- check that boot sequence is set to cd
(ask if you don't understand)
- turn on the computer
- place XPcd in the computer
- turn off the computer
- turn on the computer again
- when prompted press any key to boot from cd
('Welcome to Setup' screen appears)
(choose the recovery console option)
- press: r
- press: enter
(administrator password screen appears)
(if you haven't set this password yourself, leave blanc)
- press enter
(the black screen of the recovery console appears)
- type: run "Attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file
- press: enter
- type: delete C:\Boot.ini file
- press: enter
- type: run Bootcfg /rebuild
- press: enter
- type: run Fixboot
- press: enter
- type: exit
- press: enter
- restart your computer normally

This member is now banned. She is using a pirated copy of XP, as she admited to in our chat room a few days ago. When she did, I politely explained our policy, which she seemed to accept. Since that time, she has changed her name five or six times, continuing to come to chat to pursue help. She has wasted enough of my Staff's valuable FREE time. This is the end.
