this one interests me but I don't know myself
remember we are working blind so bare with us
also if you haven't mentioned it yet:
- what model of computer
- what os, XPpro or home
- how old is it

runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste this in slot: powercfg.cpl
- press: enter
- press tab: advanced
look and see if the setting for shutdown is correct
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste this in slot: taskmgr
- press: enter
- leave open and see what if it offers you any clues before you switch off
also
- boot in safemode and shutdown from there seeing if it does
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste this in slot: powercfg.cpl
- press: enter
- press tab: advanced
