O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin]...I've run ALL my Removal programs (Active and Non-Resident) in SAFE Mode, checked it off several times in HJT results with no positive results.....

Active Protections:
  • AOL SSC Virus/Spyware/Firewall
  • Firewall in Westwell 327W router

Non-Resident Scans:
Virus:
  • Bit Defender-8
  • ClamWin
Spyware:
  • Ad-Aware
  • Spybot S&D
  • Windows Defender
  • Super Anti-Spyware
  • Ewido (AVG)

Someone said it MAY be this.....That is the MyWebSearch Toobar spyware.[size=2]

If so, how can it be removed...if necessary?

Sorry for the delay in response. If you still need help with this, please do the following:

* Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, click on the "Save Report" button an save the results of the scan to your desktop.

Note: You have to use Internet Explorer to do the online scan.

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

* Also open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad. Copy and paste that list here.

Hello and thanks for getting back me....There is no issue with the time frame...No worries Mon.....

THAT issue has "gone the way of the Dodo"..BUT another lurks...maybe....The O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

I am certainly new to ALL this and have decided that one of the first things to learn is Security. I have done some research on this item and the results are confusing...SO, is this item a goodie or not? Perhaps you will lend a hand in its determination.

I ran the scans that you mentioned and "Enabled All" in the MSCONFIG prior the the HJT scan.

You can add SpywareBlaster to my protections. It did NOT conflict with my "Active" AOL protections as AVIRA(Anti-Vir) and AVAST(Alwil) DID. Am I "going overboard" with my protections ?..What is your "slant" on my set-up..Any recomendations will be WELL appreciated....

Hey, is I/E 7.0 "good to go" or does it still ahve some "bugging" to be worked out?

Thanks again for your help....Believe me, it is so well appreciated!!!!!

Thanks a GIG......

Yes, IE7 is good to go. I'm using it now.

Did you run the online scan? You still haven't posted the Hijack This log for me to see.

Also I asked you to post the HJT Uninstall Manager list. Are you going to do that?

I can't really offer much advice as to what you should do about anything until I see those logs. It's not a bad idea to have all those security apps, but a couple of them that you mentioned in the anti-spyware category have realtime protection options. You do not need to have more than one of them loading it's realtime protection.

I need to see those logs I requested.

WOULD YOU BELIEVE THIS!!
I did RUN AND SAVE the logs...And then posted without including them....Good God!!!!
And here they are...lol

P. S. Those additional Spyware protections.... I have their "Active" protections disabled. Prior research has given me mixed answers so I am trying a "try and see" approach. I know SpywareBlaster is ONLY active, but isn't it active in a different sector than the rest? What is your slant, if you have one on THAT whole "multi-program" shooting match.....

SpywareBlaster is fine with almost all other antispyware apps so there is no need to be concerned about running it with any of the others.

You don't have the realtime protection disabled in the other antispyware apps you have installed. You have all these running:

Spybot's IE protection:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll

AVG-Antispyware realtime protection:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [!AVG Anti-Spyware] "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe" /minimized

Windows Defender realtime protection:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" -hide

AOL Antispyware protection:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AOL Spyware Protection] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\AOLSPY~1\AOLSP Scheduler.exe"

Add to that, you have these antiviruses running:

ClamWin antivirus:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ClamWin] "C:\Program Files\ClamWin\bin\ClamTray.exe" --logon

Mcafee antivirus:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OASClnt] C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\antivirus\oasclnt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EmailScan] C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\antivirus\mcvsescn.exe

BitDefender antivirus:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BDNewsAgent] "C:\Program Files\Softwin\BitDefender8\bdnagent.exe"

Add another no no to the pile. You have two firewalls running:

Mcafee firewall:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MPFExe] C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\personal firewall\MPfTray.exe

AOL Firewall:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sscRun] C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\1143976081\ee\services\sscFirewallPlugin\ver1_10_3_1\SSCRun.exe

You have a complete mess here! You have gone way overboard on all the security. I'm surprised that the pc will even half run or let you get to any web pages.

You should never run two antiviruses or two firewalls. You can sometimes get away with running two antispware programs at the same time, but even those will usually cause problems with conflicts. You need to make up your mind immediately and narrow your choices down to one firewall, one antivirus and one antispyware app.

It is ok to keep more than one antispyware app, but you have to be sure that only one has it's realtime protection running. In the case of the firewall and the antivirus, my advice to you is to uninstall all but one of each. There is no reason for you to have more than one of these installed at a time.

As far as ctfmon.exe goes, don't worry about it. It is part of Microsoft Office:

http://www.bleepingc...n.exe-1121.html

It will continue to re-enable itself in the startups when you use Office. There are ways to disable it, but it is a pain. I leave it alone on my machines and I'm very picky about keeping the startups down to a minimum.

You don't have a malware problem, you have an anti-malware problem!

Hello!!!

The last post was with "Enable ALL" in MSCONFIG...
THIS HJT is what would appear under my normal operating Start-Up and MSCONFIG selections.
I assume that after I scan with ANY of the "too many" processes, they would then be operating in the background and portetially cause a conflict because of having 2 running at the same time. I believe THAT would be corrected with a fresh boot-up if what you see here is OK. Check out this scan, if you please and let me know if it would indicate a conflict.....

P.S. your observation---"You don't have a malware problem, you have an anti-malware problem!" was oh so accurate but I found it to be quite comical....

Now, I don't see any antivirus running.

Which antivirus are you going to use for your realtime protection?

Also which of those antiviruses do you still have actaully installed? If there are any of them that are no longer installed, we should clean up all those leftover registry entries.

Helllooooooo Again!!
Hope your day is going well. I know....until you opened MY mail.....lol

OK..NOTHING has been removed or deleted "program-wise" relative to the 2 HJT logs. The difference is that the 2nd one has the msconfig configured as I would normally have it with just AOL SSC enabled and running active. The 1st one I had "enable all" selected and as such it must appear that all security programs were enabled and active. The "too many" security programs are ALL still on the computer but the "Active" components are disabled as was in BOTH HLT posts. I intend to use them for scanning when desired.

I am using AOLs Safety and Security Center as my "active/running all the time" protections as should be indicated by the 2nd HLT log. I believe this indicates such. I would have thought "mcvsescn" would have also appeared because it is one that I check in msconfig.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MPFEXE] C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\personal firewall\MPfTray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OASClnt] C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\antivirus\oasclnt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EmailScan] C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\antivirus\mcvsescn.exe
--It appears to me that the Spyware protection is not evident here BUT when I go to AOL SSC Spyware section, it indicates that it is active and running properly..???

Last but not least...Cleaning up Registry entries........?????? I believe this id recommended whenever you delete a program...So what I have neen doing is this...
--After going to Control Panel and "removing" the program, I would do a "Search" with part of the program name and then delete what would be connected to the program. Always thought this was not exactly the right thing to do as all of the registry entries do NOT have the program title in them...
Kindly guide me as to the proper procedure to totally eliminate a program.

Thanks a GIG....Really!!!!!

P. S. How bad IS AOLs SSC...The consensus is pretty bad....lol What is your opinion?
It is said that just a little knowledge is dangerous as very well be the case here in referrence to me...But as long as I am communicating effectively to you....the battle is well in hand.

It sounds like you have it pretty well under control. Based on what you just stated, I don't see the need to go looking for leftover registry entries to clean.

As far as the AOL security software goes, I'm not impressed. However, one of the most important parts of any security strategy is the operator. If you educate yourself and do not click "Yes" to everything when you are browsing the internet and/or downloading apps, you have half the battle won. Education and common sense are key to any succesful security strategy that you implement. A very high percentage of the infections we see are self-inflicted. Many of the users would have never been infected had they not recklessly continued to click "Yes" and "OK".

Keep all your security software up to date and do weekly scans. Make sure you stay up to date on all security patches from Windows Update. Stay clear of p2p apps, warez and torrents. These take care of most of the other half.

You can also check this out for info on how to tighten your security settings and some good free tools to help prevent infections.

Aaaallll Riiiiighttttt!!!!
I finially even thought of doing something that was somewhat in agreement to industry standards. Most importantly, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for YOUR time, effort and generousity in helping me with this issue...

I must say that after adding SpywareBlaster many of the "little finds" that other SpyScanners found have all but disappeared....

Again...Thanks a GIG!!!!!
