Hi, this one interests me
remember I am working blind so bare with me
also if you haven't mentioned it yet:
- what model of computer = self built
- what os, XPpro or home =
- how old is it =

runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste this in slot: devmgmt.msc
- press: enter
- double click the sound device
- see if there are any yellow blobs means drivers missing
- go to mother board maker's site to downlard sound driver

- what model of computer = self built
- what os, XPpro or home =
- how old is it = no warrenty

did you see what drivers were missing in devmgmt.cpl, (any yellow blobs on the icons)

questions
- apart from sound is it booting normally
(if you say yes)
- download: everest old version(the free one)
http://www.oldversio...p?n=everesthome
- install and run

the thing about everest is that once running you can press on the bits marked in blue(meaning missing drivers) and if connected to the internet it will just take you to the site and sometimes directly to the missing driver download.

but it did tell you the make and model number with everest so he next step is to google for the maker's site downloading the driver for the sound.

btw two things to rule out here:

runbox command
- press buttons on keyboard: winkey + r button
- paste: mmsys.cpl
- press: enter
- click: advanced
- see if your settings are for your configuration.

runbox command
- press buttons on keyboard: winkey + r button
- paste: sndvol32.exe
- press: enter
- check to see if none have turned down or muted
