I have a couple issues going on with my computer, the most debilitating being the one in my topic description. When attempting to open a file from Win Explorer, I get an error message stating 'Instruction ___________ (code changes every time) referencing memory at _____________ (code changes every time). Memory could not be "read". This is the main message I get, though it varies, once appeared something about a Dr. Watson debugger. Also, when attempting to open a file for editing in DreamWeaver 4, the whole application closes and no message appears. Clearly, this has something to do with navigating through files. I have an external drive with my data backup which I can navigate fine, without error or crashing. I've completed all the steps required before posting my HJT log, which is listed below. As well, I've listed the other saved reports per the preparation instructions.

Hi Robyn,

I think your problem is Dreamweaver or a conflict with it. Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all the ViewPoint Software.

Then reboot and try again.

Only if that does not solve the issue uninstall Dreamweaver and try again.

I see no malware in your log, so I doubt that that is an issue, but am willing to investigate further if there are other symptoms pointing in that direction.

Pieter,
Thanks so much for your response. I uninstalled Viewpoint and Dreamweaver and rebooted, to no avail. Explorer is still crashing when attempting to open files and I've even noticed that it's more likely to crash when the folders I open have jpegs in them. In Photoshop the other day, I attempted to save an image. When I saved it as a PSD file, there was no problem. As soon as I selected JPG format from the dropdown box, Photoshop quit immediately. Any thoughts?

Yes. Did you recently install any Codecs?

Usually they are the cause for this sort of problems with XP

Not that I know of, but wouldn't Quicktime or another A/V software like iTunes automatically install some to perform correctly? Would they be located in the same directory on my system or should I do an extension search in Explorer? What extensions should I be looking for?

Thanks again for the quick response. rob

Hi Rob,

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

I'll see if I can find any notorious Codecs.

Not one that I have seen before.

Maybe the file association for jpg is wrong.

Click Start > Run > cmd > OK

this will open the command prompt.

use thsi command:
assoc .jpg <= note the space between assoc and .jpg

Normal reply should be
.jpg=jpegfile

Let me know what your computer says.

The files are associated with Photoshop and Photoshop crashed on them?

Then it may help if we relieve it of that duty.

In the command prompt use this command

assoc .jpg=jpegfile

It may require a reboot for full effect.
