... and this message still appears after I log in:

svchost.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x745f2780" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on Cancel to debug the program.

Ah goodie. That's a well documented problem.

Turn off Autoupdates and reboot.

Click on Start > Run and copy this command into the window:
REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL
When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" message, click OK.
Please repeat those steps for each of the following commands:

REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

Then visit the Update sites and try updating manually.

Reboot when nothing is being installed anymore and turn Auto-Updates back on.

I followed your instructions. This time, there were 8 updates to be installed one for Microsoft .NET and 7 for microsoft office as mentioned in my earlier posts. All updates were already downloaded. But only the .NET update was successfully installed the rest failed.

By the way, the error message about svchost did not appear this time.

That would be one step closer then. :whistling:

Can you follow the instructions given as a resolution here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903776
Allthough the problem is different I think it may solve your issue.

The page you directed me says that I should remove the Local Installation using LISTOOL. I downloaded the tool and ran it. It gave me the following message.

The Local Installation Source Tool has encontered an error: 0x80070002. Contact Microsoft Product Support for further assistance. :whistling:

The THUMP!! you heard in Europe was my head bashing my desk. :whistling:

Ok. I'll try and let you know what I think the problem is.
Windows has the path of the original installation source stored somewhere in the registry.
Assuming you installed it from a CD or another device that is no longer in use or the same, it hangs now that it can't find it anymore.

Which is why we wanted to use The Local Installation Source Tool.
I am not in the mood to troubleshoot that tool when we can do what we want it to do ourselves.
Problem is, I can barely help you with that.

Can you please look here:
http://support.micro....com/?id=884298
under Step 2: Re-create the path of the original installation source in the registry
and let me know if you can figure out what needs to be done.

No problem if you can't. I can imagine that happening.
Give it a try and let me know.

More than the website you mentioned, it is your insight into the problem helped me. I uninstalled office and re-installed. It works now! The upgrades are installed smoothly. A big thank you for your help! :whistling:
