My Friends: I just bought a Maxtor 80 GB hard drive hoping for it to be used as a back-up. I just can't format the disk to NTFS as it keeps telling me it's RAW. I tried the CONVERT and FORMAT commands in command line mode with Windows XP but the cursor just keeps blinking and I can hear the hard drive whirring away but nothing happens after 0%. Do I need special software to do this? Windows seems incapable of doing the conversion. Thanks for any help

did the drive come with a cd? it should have...if it didn't go to the download section of the maxtor website and find the family of drive that you have...click it then download the proper version of MaxBlast (i suggest using the bootable CD version if you know how to burn an ISO image) then use that software to properly format and initialize the hard drive.
