I am not able to detect the malware which is causing my explorer program to force me to the: http://safeiepage.com/ default page. I use Avast, Spybot, and Ad-aware, in addition to ZoneAlarm firewall. I ran all the preliminary cleaning steps, and my Hijakthis log is listed below.

I am greatful for help to interpret these background programs to determine which one, if any of these, are causing the 'safeiepage' problem. Cheers, Pauli

Hello,

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
  • Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
  • Do not do anything with it yet.
=====================================

Reboot into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer.
  • Before the Windows logo appear, tap F8 repeatedly.
  • A menu should appear, select Safe Mode from the menu using your arrow keys and then hit Enter on your keyboard.
  • This will take a while than usual, so just wait.
=====================================

Open the SmitfraudFix folder.
  • Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd.
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter to delete infected files.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
  • The report can also be found here - C:\rapport.txt
  • NOTE : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
=====================================

In your next reply, please include these log(s):
  • HijackThis log (new)
  • C:\rapport.txt

Hello Jag11,

I think you gave some good advise, as my explorer home page does not appear to be hijacked (web browser does not automatically go to a scam web page) after running the last two steps you suggested: SmitfraudFix and a second run of Hijackthis.

However, as you suggested, I am attaching the SmitfraudFix.log and the new Hijackthis.log below. Thank you for your time and expertise on this problem.

  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Run an online scan at Panda's ActiveScan
  • Please go here using Internet Explorer.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
  • A new window will open, click the big Check Now button.
    • Enter your Country.
    • Enter your State/Province.
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send.
    • Select either Home User or Company.
