Internet Connection Kicks Off Instant Messenger Programs

My friend has been having the problem for a week now. She'll be on AIM and MSN messenger, talking to me through one and suddenly she'll sign off. From both of them. Then a few minutes later, she'll be back on. Sometimes it's quick, sometimes it takes a long time. She's tried doing system restore once and it seemed to help but the problem still is there. She has a firewall: Titanium's Panda Antivirus, but... it doesn't seem to be causing any problems. However the internet says she still connected, just not to these programs. She can use Internet Explorer and surf--though some pages won't work for a while.

She's had a Windows Update recently, so hopefully that isn't a problem. She continues to scan her computer for viruses and such every day. Her connection speed is 100 mbps or 56 KB/s but it's slower on her computer.

Any ideas on what could be the problem?
