Hi!
I am not too tech savvy but I have a question about XP SP2 and the problems I have had with some programs since SP2 download & installation last year. I cannot get certain programs (not all) which need to connect to the internet, to work. The message I get always has to do with some sort of firewall blocking connection - even though I put them in the exceptions. I only have windows as a firewall.

The first program I had trouble with was Panda Platinum. It never could connect so I just uninstalled it. Then a Swedish record program. I just let my subscription go after 2 months of battles with their tech dept. Then AVG e-mail scanner. The latest is that I downloaded IE7 and it says I cannot connect to the internet -FTP caused by firewall again. No problem with Opera or Firefox. So I uninstalled IE7 to go back to IE6 and have the same problem. Cannot connect. I have checked and unchecked every connection thing on there. My computer is acting like it has another firewall. Again.

So OK - one program. then two. But this shows a definite pattern. And all program techs tell me that no one else has this problem so therefore I must have another firewall. Lucky me!!

In trying to figure when the problem started last year- everything worked fine until I downloaded SP2. Subsequent updates to other programs made them unusable. Am I making sense??? I use Firefox as default but would like to have access to IE again. Plus my other programs.

The bottom line is that in the last year I have written about 4 tech depts for various programs and the answer always comes up that I must have another firewall. Is there something goofed up in my installation of SP2 which might cause this???? I have no zone alarm, etc.

Can I uninstall SP2 and then reinstall? Is it worth a shot??? Am I on the right track or am I out in non-techie left field????

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Dazed and Confused, :whistling:

Go to Control Panel then to Add/Remove Programs, check list updates, look for anything that looks like a firewall or if you wish copy paste it in a .txt file and attach it here. there should be SP2 on there.

I would really like to show you but can't seem to c&p in Add/Rem programs. I tried a screenshot - couldn't seem to do that either. Any suggestions?

Nothing looks like a firewall to me. But I might be missing something. Sure wouldn't be the first time!

The SP2 was installed on 10/24/2005. All the other windows updates ( on different dates) show the little windows logo. SP2 shows a computer with a little disk. On that date, 2 windows updates (with logo) show installed but they don't say SP2. Should there be a long list of SP2 or is that it???

Thank you sooooooo much.

there should be only ONE sp2 on there.

take a snapshot at your screen by tapping the "imp Pant PetSiS" key on your keyboard and paste it on paint, zip it and attach it, i dont know how to post thumbnails, i'll find out later.... make sure all the listed programs are there. you can also attach a hijackthis log here that would help.

Here is the Hijack This. Also, I don't have the "imp Pant PetSiS". I just have a prnt screen which I was using with the alt key. And there is only one SP2 on Add/Rem.

Thanking you again!

Screen shots are coming. I was trying to put them in notebook instead of word. I'll send them in a few.

Sorry they are not in order. I didn't want to mess with moving them around and waste time. But they are readable!!

Welcome to my world! :whistling:

I was there this morning and had a clean bill of health after making changes and reposting Hijack this!!! I had a relapse that quickly????? WOW!!!

I'll post there now - but the problem with SP2 still remains.

Thank you.

Ok, there's AVG on there, im not familiarized with AVG so i don't know if it has a firewall, check that. There's also SwiftSwitch, you play Runescape dont ya? can swiftswitch connect? and can WLM connect? You've also got two versions of firefox, can both connect? and can Opera connect?

Everything connects now except IE. No firewall in AVG. The Genline is half uninstalled as the rest of it won't go. It is one that stopped connecting last year. Have uninstalled everything else that wouldn't connect. Swiftswitch is fine. But I'll bet that if they did an update, it wouldnt be.

That is just it. Some do and some don't. Mostly they stop working after they do a major update and then the different program techs give me the usual solutions (i.e. exceptions and adding ports) until they finally tell me it is my firewall along with, I am the only person who has this problem!!! I have even tried totally disabling the firewall. No difference! I am now convinced they are right, it IS ME!!! But how????

So that is why I thought it might have to do with a bad install of SP2. It is the only thing I can think of that has anything to do with firewalls.

Thoughts??

if you had any malware on the computer before installing SP2 it would cause the kinds of problems you are having...when you went to the security forum did they find anything that needed removing...if so I would uninstall SP2 and reinstall it plus the 60 plus patches for SP2...a PITA for sure...but it might get you back going again...might wait and try other suggestions first...if all else fails try it

Thanks Happyrck,
Last year was my first major infection. About the same time. I thought I was clean when I installed, but looking at the install date of SP2 and the date I joined GeeksToGo, I think you are probably correct. I will have to endure the major PITA!!! I would have gone ahead and done it now, but according to another post here, my Hijack looks bad. Nothing - not even a tracking cookie, showing up on AVG, Trojan Hunter, AVG-Edwido, etc. So I guess I'll wait for a reply in the Virus forum where I posted last night and see if they see anything.

Would I just uninstall SP2? Or do I have to uninstall every Windows update since it also???? How would I do that without being able to connect through IE??

Just when I thought it was almost over!
Thanks again.
