but I still get "Page cannot be displayed"

Thanks, Gary.

OK. Can you try if clicking this link gets you to Google:

http://66.249.85.99/

I want to find out if the problem is with your DNS

Pieter,

Clicking the link, still get "Page Cannot be displayed"

If I type in a URL, e.g google - in the bottom of the IE screen it says
connecting to site 64.233.183.104 before showing "Page Cannot be Displayed". On my other PC, it
will say 'opening page www.google.com' for example.

Din't know if this helps any. I have a sneaking suspision that when I had all the problems
removing EZ personal firewall something is still causing me a problem.

Would installing another browser e.g. Firefox help. I tried connecting to the Internet in safe mode
and I also tried clean booting without Norton but still can't connect to the Internet.

Thanks,

Gary.

Hi Gary,

I think you are right in thinking that the cause of all this was the switch in firewalls.
Did you check if the Windows firewall is disabled?

Pieter,

Windows firewall is disabled.

I couldn't connect using firefox either.

I think even although I can't see any CA EZ personal firewall programs, it may not have uninstalled
properly.

Thanks,

Gary

Gary,

The method I will post is a bit risky and could add more trouble if it backfires.
Use at your own risk because it will depend on your judgement alone.

Download CCleaner from: http://www.ccleaner.com/
Under options put a checkmark for the option to get prompted to make backups and always make sure to get a backup.

Then have the program look for problems. If our assumption is right you should get a few about SharedDlls not being present. Make sure at least all of those get fixed.

Pieter,

I'll give this a try tonight.

If it still doesn't work, would my last resort be to format my hard drive, and re-install?

If so, do you know of a good instruction to do this?

Thanks,

Gary.

I would at least try a Repair install first:

Hi Pieter,

Ran ccleaner and it did find some stuff but I still couldn't get on after fixing. Have hit a problem
with the repair install though.

I tried an xp repair which bombed out with a blue screen.

"A problem has been detected & windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

BAD_POOL_CALLER

Blah Blah

Technical info

*** stop : 0x000000c2 (0x00000007,0x00000cd4,0x00340045,oxe11de11c)

Blah blah.

It mentions asking your manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

I tried again and got the same error with around 33 minutes to go.

I checked the cd and it is SP1a, but my OS is SP2. I think this may be causing the issue
with repairing.

I'll try tomorrow night with an sp2 disc. If I boot from my hard drive now it comes up into the repair. I hope I can get passed the blue screen with the sp2 disc as I would like to save some files before resorting to formatting then installing.

Thanks again,

Gary.

Gary,

Do me and yourself a favor and ask any questions about the repair installs etc.
in the OS forum:

That is really not my strong point. :whistling:
