Hi,
I would be forever thankful for any help I receive on this issue. Recently I started receiving a "Windows security warning", it looked pretty real with the windows flag and the familiar blue color scheme, but when I would click on the scan now option it would attempt to open internet page under the domain amaena.com and then internet explorer would terminate without warning before fully loading this page. I tried to go to amaena.com manually with the same results. After this the only strange behavior I noticed is that the tab option in IE would terminate IE instead of opening a new browsing tab (this is probably unrelated but Norton Goback stopped working, it would just hang and end abruptly, I tried reinstalling from scratch with no results). I ran NAV with no results, I then downloaded Windows Defender which found and eliminated a Zlob Trojan downloader, I then ran VundoFix which found, deleted and corrected some registry entries. I thought my problems were solved but the only thing that changed was IE tab browsing started working again, but this “Windows security alert” is still installed in my system tray and NAV, Windows Defender and VundoFix won’t detect anything wrong with my system. -Thanks in advance

Attached are screenshots of the fake security alert and a freeze of the webpage before IE would terminate.
below is the hijackthis reportand and the uninstall list

Hmmm, maybe I should have read the entire first post. :whistling:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

After posting C:\rapport.txt,Please download Combofix to your desktop.
http://download.blee...Bs/combofix.exe

Doubleclick combo.exe to launch the application.

Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.

Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt

Please post that log in the next reply.

I follwed all directions after rebooting, the 'windows security warning" icon and popups disapeared (which is great) along with my background and IE home page (which was reset to msn.com) is that normal? below are the SmitfraudFix and Combofix reports. Am I 100% clean, if I am are Norton Internet Security and Windows Defender sufficiant protection for the future?
-Thanks a million

I was also wondering why IE would terminate when the popup would attempt to open amaena.com, from what I have read online a lot of poeple have been taken to amaena.com and following instructions, unknowingly downloaded viruses. Why was I lucky? Also did this have anything do to with crippling Norton Goback?(my PC still crashes every time I open NortonGoback.)-Thanks in advance

I dont know much about Nortons Go Back and the popups are a direct results of the Vundo Infection.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it again.
  • Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
  • Copy&Paste the entries below into the open boxes
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\kaatcrxo.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\yayxxxu.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\winrkp32.dll
  • Click Add Files and Click Close Window
  • Click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.

In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, allow the computer to reboot and VundoFix to load.

Just add the very same files as before and Click Remove Vundo.

After posting those 2 logs,Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner

Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
  • Follow the Instruction on the F-Secure page for proper installation.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
  • The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

I know the popups and the the system tray icon were from the Vundo Infection, i was just wondering why IE would terminate when I would click on the popup (instead of trying to get me to download a virus from amaena.com, which is what happened to most poeple.) Anyway below are the two logs and I'll post the scan results as soon as I have them. - Thanks again.

Interesting point, maybe the ActiveX in the webpage didnt load? :whistling:

Open HijackThis-> Click "Do a System Scan Only" and put a check by these but DO NOT hit the Fix Checked button yet

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1DAEFCB9-06C8-47c6-8F20-3FB54B244DAA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\kaatcrxo.dll (file missing)

Now Make sure ALL WINDOWS and BROWSERS are CLOSED and hit the Fix Checked Button

Post the F-Secure results when finished.

I followed directions, but after clicking "fix checked" hijakthis goes blank; it doesnt seem to be doing anything and there is no option to save log. Should I run the scan again and save log?

Tell ya what, find HijackThis.exe and right click on it.

Select Rename and rename HijackThis.exe to foo.exe

Double Click foo.exe to launch HijackThis.

Scan fresh and post that log.
