I stumbled across your site while trying to find a way to rid my computer of the malware/spyware that I now have, courtesy of my kids. I have run CWS, but it says it's unable to update (perhaps because it is free version?). Nothing comes up. I updated my Spybot and it removed 29 reg entries. Now it says computer is clean. I also ran Panda. Panda didn't find anything. I have Norton Internet Security 2005, which seems to have fallen asleep on the job. I didn't have any trouble with 2004 version. Anyway, I still have malware because mystery popups are still a problem. When I went to Trend Micro's Housecall site, I got a pop-up for antivirus software from offeroptimizer (I think they are responsible for the Pynix problem). It feels like the bad guys are watching me and laughing because I will never get this mess off of my computer! Okay, enough babbling. I'm so glad you are here! Thanks for any help you can give me. Here is my HJT file...

gomp9700, welcome to G2G.

I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are very busy. If you are still having malware troubles, I will be glad to help. Due to the length of time passed, I need to see a new HijackThis Log.

Please post a new HJT log in this thread.

Thanks for responding. I'm not getting the pop-ups anymore, but I think I have missed something, because I stil have Pynix showing up in some of my scans. I downloaded Ad-Aware and updated Spybot.S & D. I also downloaded TD3, but I'm not sure what I get out of it. Oddly enough, once I rid myself of what I could, Norton started picking up stuff instead of running clean. I wonder if the malware affected the Norton software...

Thanks for any help to finally get the computer completely clean.

gomp9700,

If you're no longer getting popups, the Pynix infection is probably dead, and some remnants are being detected by Norton and/or Spybot. Pynix is a newer transponder variant, and should be fixed by Ad-aware. You haven't mentioned that you ran it, but even if you have, please do so again.

Please download Ad-aware SE Personal 1.05 and install it.

Before scanning with Ad-aware SE Free:
Run a FULL adaware scan using the following configuration below
  • Update
    • Select Check for updates.
    • Then Connect and download the latest reference file.
  • Click Start
  • Select Perform Full System Scan and hit Next to let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
  • It will list malware files and registry keys. Click Next.
  • Under the Critical Objects tab, rightclick in the list, choose Select All, then Next.
  • It will ask for verification of checked items. Choose OK.
  • Close Ad-Aware, Shut down and reboot your system.
Rescan with HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank

You have PowerReg Scheduler in your log. This is a registration reminder that is used by a number of different companies. It is not needed and some people think that it reports back to the company about your computer, so I suggest fixing it...

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

Now, close all windows including your browser and then click "Fix Checked" in Hijackthis.

Next, do a search for the file Pynix.dll. If found, try to delete it.

Next, clean out all the temporary files and cookies on your system. Go to Start > Run and enter: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Check these three boxes and then press ok to remove: Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin.

Reboot and post a new HJT log.

insipid,

Thanks for your help. I did run Ad-Aware previously. I ran it again, as you instructed. Nothing came up this time :tazz:

The Pynix search came up negative and I ran cleanmgr. Hopefully, I will be ablee to stay on top of things now. This is the first problem of this sort that I have had on this computer since I got it in Dec. 2000 (cable access since 2002). Now that the kids are getting older, I will have to be even more careful.

gomp9700, that's a clean log :tazz:. Is Norton still complaining?

I'm happy to hear you've enjoyed trouble-free computing for so long, but kids will be kids, so it's a good idea to protect yourself as best you can.

Here are some tips to help reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future:

Please read Tony Klein's article: So how did I get infected in the first place?.

It is extremely important to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up-to-date. Please go to http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us regularly and install ALL critical updates.

It would be a good idea to install a firewall if you don't have one . Here are a few free ones:
Kerio Personal Firewall
Zone Alarm
Sygate Personal Firewall
For ease of use, I recommend Zonealarm.

I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D regularly to scan your system. Links to excellent tutorials on these programs are in my signature below.

Finally, I suggest downloading and trying Mozilla Firefox browser. Firefox is a free fully functional browser. It's much safer than Internet Explorer.
