Dear avajo4, :whistling:

Save the file to the following directory: "C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc" as hosts and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files".

If the new "hosts" file you created is actually a text file like: "hosts.txt" then this is not correct and you should delete this file and create a new "hosts" file.

I told you to make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files" when creating this file.

If the hosts file you created is a text file meaning: host.txt, then you did it wrong and you should create a new hosts file.

This is not a difficult task to do, in fact it is a quite easy procedure, which I know you can do!!!

Let me know when the "new" hosts file is created, thank you.

Okay, Your gonna die with this question. LOL

Just what does the hosts files do? Am I correct in saying that they keep us from going to the "bad" places on the intrernet? Did I block all hosts when I renamed it Xhost? That is what I get from the link you gave me, but don't know if I am reading and understanding correctly.

Look, avajo4, for now just read post #46 in this thread, and get that "hosts" file created correctly. I have a number of other posts to give you, to get your computer system back into some kind of working shape.

Please read my instructions carefully and read my instructions multiple times in order to understand them.

I copied to notepad and save to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc. It is in with the other hosts files that I renamed. It does not say hosts.txt. It just says hosts, but under it , it says text document, where the others say sam file, mvp file etc. This is what I did

copied and went to file and clicked save as, put it in C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc, saved as ALL files.

Dear avajo4, :whistling:

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {B987E7E7-5997-4330-A5F9-9FFEFC1CCFD0} - (no file)

Restart your computer.
***************************

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

I need you to install sun java software, please uninstall any previous versions of the sun java software through your Add or Remove programs.

(Note: Looking at your last Add/Remove program list this is the application you need to uninstall: J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7).

I would like you to download some java software (i.e. good to have on you computer system, just keep it updated).

Go to the following link: http://java.sun.com/....0/download.jsp

This should bring you to a web site whose title is: Java SE Downloads

Click on the fourth download: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9. The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Note: The link itself should say: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9

Click on this link.

This should bring you to a web site whose title is: J2SE™ Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

Accept the License Agreement by clicking on its associated "radio/option" button.

Scroll to the box that says: Windows Platform - J2SE™ Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

Click on the link that says: Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and proceed with the download and installation. (Note: It should also say: jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p.exe - 15.74 MB)

Restart your computer and then post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :help:

Dear avajo4, :whistling:

I would like you to generate a "Add/Remove Software list" log using the HijackThis application. Here is how you can do this:

Restart your computer.
  • Open Hijackthis, In the lower right corner click the "Config..." (Configuration) button.
  • Once in the "Configuration" panel, click "Misc Tools" button.
  • Then click the "Open Uninstall Manager..." button.
  • The "Add/Remove Programs Manager" panel should appear.
  • In this panel click the "Save list" button.
  • Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file to its default location.
  • Then copy and paste the notepad text that appears in the generated "unistall_list.txt" file in a reply to this post.

Dear avajo4, :whistling:

Please download SilentRunners from here: http://www.silentrun...ent Runners.zip. Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, it will create a logfile on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile in a reply to this post.

Dear avajo4, :whistling:

I should of told you that the SlientRunners application takes a while to execute. Please re-run the SlientRunners application again waiting for the program to finish executing to completion. You will know when the SlientRunners application has finished running when you see the following at the end of the SlientRunners log. For example:

+ This report excludes default entries except where indicated.
+ To see *everywhere* the script checks and *everything* it finds,
launch it from a command prompt or a shortcut with the -all parameter.
+ To search all directories of local fixed drives for DESKTOP.INI
DLL launch points, use the -supp parameter or answer "No" at the
first message box and "Yes" at the second message box.
---------- (total run time: 49 seconds, including 17 seconds for message boxes)
