First of all thanks to this site - This is an awesome forum and I have learned a lot already.

I continue to be plagued by Pop Up adds from the services above - the OINADSERVICE seems to be the most persistent.

Here was my situation before finding your website.
1. I am running Windows XP Home and downloaded and installed SP2 several weeks ago.
2. I was already using SPYBOT 1.3 - it is up to date with the latest definitions.
3. I also run McAfee Virus Scan via the free AOL service - it is up to date.
4. I also have the McAfee firewall
5. I downloaded and occasionally run the Microsoft beta AntiSpyware

I performed your steps 1 to 4 yesterday - and all seemed well. I turn my computer on this morning and I started getting pop ups for the above mentioned malware almost immediately upon opening IE.

I ran SPYBOT again today and it came up clean
AD AWARE SE came up with 6. I removed them and rebooted.
I just ran HIJACK This and here is the log.

Thanks in advance to whom ever takes mercy on me!

Dan

Hello camberdan and welcome to G2G forums.

===============

Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

1. Click "Free Online Scan".
2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

1. Select all available drives.
2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean".
3. Click "Scan".

When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

===============

Download the Adware.Istbar removal utility from Symantec and following the instructions on the same page.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\??plorer.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {10ACA6BF-3A51-11D2-7E71-38B67F6BF3C7} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vyjzjw.dll (file missing)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DA8DAE8C-E972-42CE-BE2A-6E3E1296ECC1} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\nbojcba.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [u0@]"iC:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\tinnx.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [u0]"igC:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\tinnx.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [u0@]"u0C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\WINDOWS\tinnx.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iF0.exe] C:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp\iF0.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [szL9.exe] C:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp\szL9.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ptn.exe] C:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp\ptn.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Meuu] C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\mdse.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Lqvwaxt] C:\WINDOWS\System32\??plorer.exe

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
...(Unless you've set these with a anti-spyware program like SpyBot's Immunize feature, have HiJackThis fix this.)

O15 - Trusted IP range: 67.19.185.246 (HKLM)
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in Trusted Zone, should be Internet Zone (HKLM)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to"view system and hidden files/folders":

folders...

C:\PROGRAM FILES\Toolbar
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc

files...

C:\WINDOWS\tinnx.exe
C:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp\iF0.exe
C:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp\szL9.exe
C:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp\ptn.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\mdse.exe

Important info about this file ! ??plorer.exe - "?" could be any letter. This bad file will look like in the picture below.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\??plorer.exe <-- this file
There is a legit file explorer.exe file in C:\WINDOWS\ folder . Don't delete this file, it is the Windows Explorer.

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Download, install and run Cleanup! from Steven Gould, then:

1. Click "Cleanup!"

(wait for the program to finish scanning your system, and selecting files to be removed.)

2. Exit the program and reboot the computer, if necessary.

===============

Download Hoster from here Unzip, install the program and run it. Choose the 'Restore Original Hosts' button and press OK.

===============

Post back a new log, report any problems and let me know how everything goes.

IMPORTANT! DO NOT RESTART YOUR COMPUTER UNLESS ASKED TO DO SO!

Njustice,

OK, here is my final log I hope. While all of this is going on the last week I also downloaded and began using Firefox. No more annoying pop ups so far. So between hopefully having a clean system and junking IE I am free at last.

Thanks for the help.

Hi camberdan,

Congratulations at last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future(some you may have already implemented).

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wildersse...ywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiu...ww/resource.htm
d. Bugoff: http://www.majorgeek...wnload4308.html

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.koll...n&page=download

Before adding any other Spyware Detection and Removal programs always check the Rogue Anti-Spyware List for programs known to be misleading, mistaken, or just outright "Foistware". You will find the list here: http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware,htm

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
a. http://www.corestreet.com/spoofstick

6. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. See the links below:
a. ZoneAlarm
b. Kerio

7. Reset System Restore
If you are using Windows ME or Windows XP, please reset your System Restore. See Windows help for information.

8. Use GoogleToolbar - It's free, blocks popups and takes seconds to install. Use the toolbar without the advanced features enabled(check this during install), the toolbar is completely inert--it doesn't send any information to Google whatsoever as you surf.
a. GoogleToolbar

9. RegScrubXP 3.25 - Safely cleans junk out of the Windows. 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition.
a. RegScrubXP 3.25

Good luck, and thanks for coming to our forums for help with your security and malware issues.
