Sorry about the late response. I didn't get the chance to phone Microsoft until today. Anyways I told them I had misplaced the xp cd and wanted to buy a replacement but they wouldn't give me one, wouldn't even tell me how much it would cost. I think mainly because I couldn't give them a product id b/c I couldn't get on the computer to get to it anyways, which I told them. They said I would have to talk to Compaq, [which I told them they said phone Microsoft so they are no help], or buy a new retail one which is about $200! I don't know what I'm going to do. I really don't want to spend $200 on a cd. I don't know why Microsoft won't just give me a replacement cd, they did before, and for free and that computer had it preinstalled and didn't come with an xp cd and I think they knew that and still gave me one. Could I reinstall xp with an xp upgrade cd or would that not work? I know it costs less than the windows cd.

Hi ctdgcrsntf...

Yes, you can install Windows XP (even a complete clean install) with an XP Upgrade cd. You must have an older version of Windows on cd for upgrade verification in order to do so, however. Your current cd should work to verify upgrade eligibility, but it wouldn't hurt to have another Windows cd on hand just in case...any previous version will work...even a borrowed one. You'll want to use the new product key.

As a side note, it's Compaq that should be replacing the cd for you...not Microsoft. Under Microsoft's volume licensing agreements, any support for the preinstalled operating system falls to the manufacturer that installed it using the license.

Ok, thanks. Does the upgrade cd do a repair install also?

Hi Keith. I've decided that I'm going to transfer the broken computer's harddrive to my other computer. If I add a replacement harddrive to the broken pc though, will I be able to use Compaq's recovery disk on the pc to reinstall windows?

Yes...to both questions.

The retail upgrade cd includes both the option to repair and Recovery Console for other types of repairs.

Using the recovery disks to reinstall XP on a new hard drive would be the method I would recommend as it will save you having to round up all the device drivers for the machine...they are included in the recovery set.

Ok thank you Keith and wannabe1 for your help. I guess I don't have anything more to add to this topic as long as the recovery process goes as it should. I should have the harddrives and recovery done hopefully within the next 2 weeks. I'm very grateful for all of the help you've given me and the quick response time too! It's wonderful how you and all of the other experts volunteer your time to help people fix their computers especially free of charge! Again, thank you very much. :whistling:

I had the harddrive transferred to the other pc, had a new harddrive added to the broken one and did the recovery. It all went well now I guess I just have to reinstall my anti-spyware programs anti-virus and anything else I need. Thanks.
