can't be heard on pc to pc phone calls

Dell Dimension 4500 Pentium 4 running Windows XP.
Just signed up for Yahoo IM instant messaging with voice. I can hear HIM just fine on my speakers, he can't hear me. I've used the Dell mic to record to media player with no problem. Dial a Tech is NO help.
Noticed in the control panel I have a Unimodem HALF duplex audio device. Does that mean anything???
