If the computer is connected to the cable modem via a USB port then you need to install a driver for the modem (this is supplied by your cable-modem provider or manufacturer).
However, the best type of connection for net access is by connecting the PC to the modem via an ethernet cable, as this doesn't require a third-party driver. For this to be possible, however, your modem and PC must each have an ethernet port. If the modem has such a port but your comp does not, you can easily add one by installing a network card into a spare PCI slot. Windows XP uses it's own driver for this type of card.

It connects through ethernet and has been hooked up via cable modem before i just had to install a fresh windows xp after it crashed.
