Hello,

My problem is my computer gets slower and slower as it runs, and it also hangs up quite often. I can just click on a desktop icon and it will hang the computer up. Sometimes I can unhang it by hitting escape, but most of the time, I have to alt-control-del. I have ad-aware, spybot, spywareblster, spysubtract...everything checks good. I look at system resources, and it's always above 70%. Also, when I open a new IE window, it takes about 30 seconds for the new window to even show up on the screen. Alos get a lot of error messages, always different, nothing consistent.

I was thinking it was a ram problem, but I ran memtest and microsofts version and both found no errors.

Also, today. I tried scanreg /fix..and it hung up when trying to rebuild the system.dat, which was like the second file...so it didn't get to far.

I am running windows 98 with a 500mhtz pentium III and a 128mb ram.

Thanks

Scott

Sean,

Thanks for the quick response.

Scandisk and defrag. has all been ...in fact it ran last night. Yesterday I tried to download 30 day trial tune up that is recommended in other post. I wasn't able to download it yesterday, every time I went to the download page,it was blank. Tried again today and today I was able to get it. Just ran that also, it said it found 20 problems in the registry and over 200 in various programs, and then it degraged the registry. Didn't really seem to help. In fact as I was logging on here to post this, my computer hung up again.

When I say I have to hit control - alt - delete, ....it says program is not responding....I click on end program....but then it hangs up there also, I can move my mouse aound, but I can't click on anything. Once in a while it will close out the program and then my inactive desktop will appear, but most of the time it will hang up and I have to control-alt-del to restart the computer and even that will hang once in a while and then I just have to hit the reset button.

Thanks

Sean,

I was in dos mode when I ran scanreg.exe /fix the first time. I tried your way of getting there, to make sure I was in the right spot. I actually had to rename the original msdos.sys file because it is a read only document and then change the 1 to a 0 and resave my new file as msdos.sys. i usaully just hit F8 while booting up and that gets me to msdos.

But anyways...when I run just sanreg ( not .exe /fix ) it says that there are no errors in my registry.

But when I ran scanreg.exe /fix today it stopped at the system.dat file and said " Windows found an error in your system files and was unable to fix the problem. Try deleting some files to free up disc space on your windows drive. If that doesn't work then you need to install windows to a new directory" I find that kind of odd sice I only have 6.84GB used up on a 14.3GB drive.

Thanks

Sean,

Thanks, that seems to have taken care of it, at least I hope!!! SFC said that it found a setup file that was corrupt.

Seems to be more responsive now. I even tried opening up as many applications as I could to make it hang, but so far so good.

IE still takes a little while to open new windows, but I can live with that:)

What would have been the next step, or the next couple of steps?

Thanks

Sean,

Seems my problems are not cued. Computer still hangs up. Ran scnreg.exe /fix in dos mode again and still hangs at the systm.dat file.

I have some more digging and found that if the systm.dat file is larger then 9.0mb, it will cause these problems.

Where and how to find my system.dat fie and how do i know how big it is? How do I know what files I can get rid of and what I can't... or how do I compress the files to get them below 9.0mb.

Thanks

Sean,

Thanks for your efforts again, much appreciated!!!

I think I got it this time......when I put the extra stick of memory in, the whole inside of the computer was very dusty and I also noticed one of the fans on the power supply was running. I put a new power supply in today and the case of the tower and everything is much cooler to the touch......seems to have fixed the problem. I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed. but so far so good.
