can you tell if that drive is powering (spinning) up?

yyes it does make the normal vibrations

unless someone comes up with another idea, you might want to see if you can send it back for a new one. I think I saw something about a life time warranty on that ebay site....

I don't know if it would matter or not....are you using a 80 wire cable?

idk, and i have 2 of the adaptors and they both do the same thing
