I have NO idea whats wrong with my other computer~! I have two computers in my household, both with XP. I have 1 RCN (toshiba) cable modem connected to a "EtherFast Cable/DSL Router" (with 4 port switch) from Linksys. Only one omputer works with the internet connection. The second, says that theres a connection, buh theres a problem "Renewing the IP address" . I knew something like this would happen. I havent used the second computer in months, and i dont know if im right, buh the IP expires within a week or something and its hard to get back unless you are using that computer (with the internet) a lot (or something). (hope you guys can understand my situation) Ive tried EVERYTHING (or so i think) . I've tried to repair the connection, uninstall and reinstall the TCP/IP thing (with a program you guys had) and tried fixing my WINsock thing with that program. It had a few errors and the conection STILL didnt work after i rebooted, so i restored the system registration (the backup). and im back to the same problem. I have everything on "Automatically Obtain". and switched up a few thing to see if my internet would be restored. STILL, no connection . Been trying for about a week or so now. Can ANYONE help me?! Everyone keeps telling me the same thins ive already tried, and i cant call my ISP because when i got the cable modem installed, the man didnt even know what he was doing. I ended up installing it for him. (yes i know a little about computers, but not much) Well, ill leave this post at that, dont want to type too much, or confuss anyone. p.s. basically, im the only person in the houshold who ever knows what to do when a computer has a problem in our house. Im the one who usually ebds up with the responsibility of fixing it. Im 15 and i go to a Rigurous art school (visual artist/graphic designer/potter BLABLA etc), and right now i really need my internet back on my other computer soon, at least by monday, because i have this graphic design thing due. PSP7 isnt on this computer, and i cant get the file onto this computer because it's too big, and isnt finished (so i cant compress it right now) Hoping i can get some help soon, so i would be able to upload it to my website.

Sorry, we've got to start with the basics. You've powered off the modem. Powered off both computers, powered the modem back up, and then the computers?

Start -> Run, type command, OK, type ipconfig /all. Does it show an IP address? If so, What are the first few numbers?

You've tried running ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew from the command line?

Um, im not sure what a Cat5 is, but is that the kind of wire im using to connect the computer to the Cable Modem and Router? (if so then yes, thats what i think the box said when i bought the cables) I never had a problem with internet on both computers a few months ago.

Yes, ive tried turning off everything, both computers, the cable modem, and the router (and reseting the router, holding the button for about 30 seconds). After that, the computer just obtains a new IP address that doesnt work and the same problem continues.

Yes, ive tried ipconf /all, /release, /renew. When i tried renew, a message came up saying "
An errror occured while renewing interface Local Area Internet Connection : An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket. "
Im guessing that means "Renewing the IP failed" .

Oh and i almost forgot, the first few numbers of the IP were 169.254.18 (subnet mask: 255.255.0.0 and no default gateway) I was told that it was suppost to be 192.168.1.xxx (xxx being any number greater than 100). Everytime the address was renewed, it didn't have any of those numbers.

When i tried manually entering the IP 192.168.1.xxx ("), i then repaired the connection and it said there was no problem, buh when i'd open my internet explorer, it either wouldnt open because i was offline, or would prompt windows asking me to connect/stay offline or saying there wasnt a connection. (opening my internet explorer is starting to become a problem too)

When i'd test the IP('s) in "Broadcom Advanced Control Suite", they'd "fail". and i am not able to "refresh".

Maybe the problem lies within Winsock. Can you please explain what exactly that is for? (i tried fixing Winsock with one of your programs, buh there was a problem, and i think i remember the last window saying "error 55" or something like that (?)

Good work PaolitaBaby Thanks for sharing your resolution with us, and the MSKB link, as it may help others with the same problem.

Winsock files are often damaged either by spyware, or sometimes the in-proper removal of it.

Just out of curiousity did you try WinSockXPFix?

ok now i have another problem. im tyring to fix my friends computer and it basically has the exact same problem as i do. I tired EVERYTHING that i did to my comp to try and fix it, buh it doesnt work, i even tried that new winsock fixing thing you mentioned earlier out of curiosity. Any other suggestoins? Or do i have to reboot this computer like new?

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Thanks sooo much for posting your solution to this!!!! I had the same problem and reinstalling the Winsock and Winsock2 into the registry from a working computer did the trick.
