opening pdf files

(BTW I haven't been able to search your site for this subject. I guess the problem is the word "pdf")

Using XP, I can't open pdf files which have been emailed to me. A "File Download " box appears giving me the option to open or save. When I click "open" nothing happens apart from the box disappearing. When I click "save", I can find it on my desktop, but again, when I double click the desktop icon, nothing happens.

What you need to open pdf files is Adobe Acrobat, you can get a free version here http://www.adobe.com.../readstep2.html

nothing wrong with adrobe but if you just want to open any pdf file without installing or without the heaviness of adrobe the much lighter free foxitreader is for you, for example put it on your USB key and the open it browse to pdf file and open
