This has me perplexed. :whistling:

You said earlier that your pop-up blocker is allowing the pop-ups? I wonder if you could uninstall javascript and reinstall it? What version of Mozilla are you running?

Hi Coachwife6

I am using Firefox version 2.0, the latest version.

I have removed javascript completely from my computer, I tried CNN without reloading javascript and my settings are still being changed to allow popups.

It would appear that even though I do not have javascript installed when I block sites with the NoScript Options I do not get popups, or get my whitelist changed, when I allow scripts I get popups and get my whitelist changed.

Does any of this help? Should I reinstall Java?

Thanks for your help.

I am going to ask someone about this. Try reinstalling Java. I have firefox 2.0 on my laptop and I don't like it that much, or maybe I'm not used to it.

Try reinstalling Java. I tried CNN on my laptop with firefox 2.0 and on my desktop with 1.5. It was a little different...blocked popups on home page on desktop (gave me the banner that it had blocked) but did not do that on my laptop until I clicked a link.

When you say you are getting pop-ups, what are the pop-ups for?

Hi Coachwife6

Re your post, the popups were internet gambling, dating sites and Viagra, no relation to the site I am visiting.

I have reinstalled javascript, the popups have stopped but sites like Cnn are still being added to my whitelist everytime I visit them, even though I clear my whitelist. I have no sites that I allow popups from.

I have used Firefox for over a year, 2.0 since launch, and I like it much better than IE7, only use that for Microsoft updates.

Many thanks for your help, at least the annoying popups are gone.

Is CNN the only site that is doing this or is the NYTimes, etc., other sites allowing it as well? I check a lot of news sites each day as part of my job, so this is of interest to me as well. I am wondering if it's because you registered at those sites and that was part of the registration agreement? If it's other sites that don't require registration, then we can rule that out.

Yes, I'm glad the pop-ups are gone. That must have been horrendous.

Hi Coachwife6

This is very strange when I first started posting all my news sites, CNN, NY Times Washington Post ect changed my settings to allow popups.

When I went to test today after your post, both CNN and USA Today changed to allow popups, and added themselves to my white list (this only happens after I open an article in the web site) the others did not.

After I cleared CNN and USA Today from my allowed popups site, then opened these sites again the settings were not changed, and everything appears to be working as it should at the moment.

If it helps when the USA today site changed, in the small box next to the NoScript button, the follow was there

'showhttp://www.usatoday.com/advertising/orbitz/orbitz/orbitz2-window-unldpop.htm'

Does this give any clues?

Many thanks again for your help.

Aberhillboy.

PS only the US news sites changed my settings the UK ones did not.

How is everything working now? Did it revert back? This is odd but interesting to me because I am on these sites all the time. I apologize for so much delay in getting back wwith you. This is the busiest itme of the year for me both personally and professionally.

It seems as if Orbitz is causing you headaches. I have the same problem with Vonage on one news site and may try to replicate your problem with that one.

Have you installed spyware blaster?

SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.

Hi Coachwife6

I have had Spywareblaster installed for about two years now.

I have tried these sites again, CNN and USA Today are again changing the settings and adding themselves to my whitelist. The others Washington Post NY Times etc are all working as normal, blocking all popups.

On CNN in the box below allow popups was the following,

Does this mean anything to you?

Do not worry about the time to get back to me, I am glad of your help in trying to fix this problem. Even though I am no expert I think this must be something that loaded along with something I gave permission to download, but the only thing I can think of was KLite.

Thanks for the help

Aberhillboy.

PS what is orbitz?

CNN and USA Today are owned by the same organization, so that seems about right.

Orbitz is some type of business. Can't remember what they sell...maybe airline flights?

Please download Rootkit Revealer (link is at the very bottom of the page)
  • Unzip it to your desktop.
  • Open the rootkitrevealer folder and double-click rootkitrevealer.exe
  • Close ALL windows and programs and do nothing on the pc while the scan runs. This includes games, browser windows, email clients, etc.
  • Click the Scan button (bottom right)
  • It may take a while to scan (don't do anything while it's running)
  • When it's done, go up to File > Save. Choose to save it to your desktop.
  • Open rootkitrevealer.txt on your desktop and copy the entire contents and paste them here

Download and install Tune Up 2006 Trial

Run Tune Up Disc Clean Up

Run Tune Up Registry Clean Up

Click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, which will take a few minutes and need a reboot. You should disable the antivirus programme to run this

Check the anti virus is running after the reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

Hi Coachwife6

None of that type of popups now. Only have CNN and USA Today changing settings to allow popups and adding themselves to my whitelist.

regards

Aberhillboy.
