This morning when I go to log on I get an error saying how my user profile is corrupted and I must use a temporary user profile. I made a new profile for the time being, just in case I can't recover.

It would make my life much easier if I had my old profile back, any suggestions?

Look at Microsoft article 811151, How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile.

I have that up, but there are some things I cannot find to import and it just seems like if there was a way to fix it, it would be a lot easier.

What would cause this sort of thing?

I've seen several profile corruptions, but I don't really know what caused them. Sorry. Maybe someone else??
