What would you reccommend besides AVG to do the job AVG does? (preferably a freeware program without a trial period)

Took the words right out of my mouth. Try it out and see: http://www.free-av.com/

This program does not come with a Firewall though.

I suggest Avast. I used it for a little bit, and while I wasn't a fan of the interface, it seemed to work just fine.

AntiVir is far much better then AVG, so AVG cant be equal to AntiVir, neither AntiVir is the next best after AVG. AntiVir is simply better then AVG.

I used all this three antivirus programs and i prefer avast! 4 Home Edition, used it for long time and still using it, never had a problem with it, and it best suits my requirements. You can schedule a boot time scan, you have seven providers that are protecting you, you can use the avast screen saver which also scans your computer while you are away, it detects trojans too, easy to set up, light on resources, automatic updates every day usually two times in day and etc. If you don't like the default Interface, then you can easily change it by going to the web site and choose one of the available 39 skins.
