Connecting pc to pc

Ok can I or how do i connect 2 pcs directly together? I am trying to connect my old pc to my new one so I can use it for storage and keep this one clutter free, how do I do this? I thought I could set it up just with the eithernet connection or do I need to use the serial port or even get a router? Any help would be great, thank you.
